Blaming Chip Caray for all of the TBS shortcomings in covering
postseason baseball would be like faulting Jose Reyes’ injury for all
of the New York Mets’ woes. It’s only part of the problem.

Caray was his usual overmatched self tonight during the opening game
of the National League Championship Series, acting confused in the
fifth inning when Shane Victorino struck out and Dodgers catcher
Russell Martin missed the ball. It took analyst Buck Martinez to tell
viewers that Victorino was already out because first base was occupied
and there were less than two outs.

Not that Martinez is going to win a Sports Emmy anytime soon. He has
joined Caray and Ron Darling for a three-man booth, which still isn’t
enough.

As Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw was in full meltdown, neither
Darling nor Martinez discussed the wisdom or lack thereof by L.A.
manager Joe Torre of leaving the rookie in the game. Both said Torre
was showing a lot of confidence in Kershaw, but neither ventured
outside his comfort zone by questioning the move. The lack of insight
was glowing when Ryan Howard drove in two runs for a 5-1 Phillies
lead.

In my view, the best TBS play-by-play announcer in the Division Series
was Don Orsillo, the best analyst Bob Brenly, and the best tandem
Brian Anderson with Joe Simpson. None of them are working this LCS.
