Visit From JC...

JC and I finally connected Wednesday night and made plans to meet
Thursday am and head south to see The Nose. Thursday dawned very
ugly, nasty, cold and rainy with little bits of sleet mixed in. Ugh. We
drove to Eileen's to pick up JC and arrived up on the mountain in a
little snow squall. Knocked on the door, no one answered so we went
down to check the barn for human life. Said hi to Carl's chickens along
the way. No one in the barn so we peeked in the stalls before calling
JC, who met us in the driveway and took us down for formal
introductions.

They were inside because of the nasty weather so impressions were
confined to looking at them in the stalls.

CC is nice, nice, nice. Great Irish type. As I said in my previous post,
she is a knockout in person. Dancer is a lovely Tb mare with all that
implies in terms of looks, Baby is very pretty and very substantial.
Saw Rain and Lite and my goodness, they are two peas in a pod as
far as their head. It's uncanny. Belles was behind Lite so we could
only see her shadow. But Eileen is quite close so we'll try to arrange
a visit on a nicer day - maybe if the planets line up correctly JJ could
even get there! ;-)

So we crowded into the car, turn the heat on high Smile and headed south
to Equi-Ventures in Sellersville, current home to Da Nose. Cruiser left
off his work demolishing his hay and came to greet us. Again yucky
weather though no snow down there so we had to take pictures in
the barn and indoor arena. Cruiser played The Nose Game, ate
cookies and was very, very interested in the camera covering JC's
face. We decided to put a bridle on him and take him in the indoor
for more pictures. At that point Fernando came in and said that Jeff
had called down and if we had time, he'd be down to ride Cruiser
in about ten minutes. Sure! So we brought Cruiser in to groom and
tack up. But! It was now LUNCHTIME! and Cruiser *loves* LUNCH!
(well, all meals actually, but LUNCH! was being served now.) Now
The Nose has become somewhat of the barn favorite and pet,
because he is friendly and has nice manners. Fernando who is
basically the head guy and really the manager loves him and he
was bringing the LUNCH! around. He stopped at the wash rack
and allowed Cruiser a few bites ot of the bucket before going on
to his stall. JC has a photo of it. So while it was not LUNCH! per se,
it was at least an appetizer.

Jeff showed up, preceded by The Posse (his three Aussies) and took
Cruiser into the indoor for a ride, where Cruiser demonstrated his
lateral work which has always been good but is getting better as
he matures, his counter canter and his new lead changes, which are
getting very reliable. (Jeff calls Cruiser "A good student.") The indoor
is not huge and Cruiser is so that is very good. He also worked with
adjusting the stride - The Nose can now go from a normal canter to
a hand gallop and then shorten very quickly and smoothly. Cool.
(There are two raised caveletti in the outdoor set at a normal 7
strides. All the horses are expected to put in varying number of
strides smoothly - from six to eight. Cruiser can blast out of the
corner, shorten in one stride before the first cavaletti and then
put in an even eight with no problem.)

We took Cruiser back after Jeff cooled him out. Groomed him, more
pictures, he was dying to get into his stall for LUNCH! so when we
deemed him suitable to eat, we put him back. And then he finally
got LUNCH!

We stopped for lunch on our own and looked at the pictures while
JC picked out ones she thought had promise. (Relax folks, give her
a chance to get the album up! LOL) then drove home. JC wondered
if she could get some shots of the autumn foliage with snow on it.
"Not a problem" I assured her. And indeed it was not.

Fun visit and if JC is going to be in your area, I could not recommend
her more highly for pictures and some really fun and interesting horsey
conversation.

I've been plagued with network problems on my laptop. Apple is ordering
a new motherboard, and hopefully that will speed up my uploading and
emailing! So... today I finally got Cruiser's photos uploaded:

I had a blast playing with Da Nose, watching him under saddle in person,
visiting with Sue and Nina, meeting Jeff, everything. If you ever get a
chance to meet them and Cruiser in person, do it! The only downside was
the weather not cooperating for a portrait session - we had to do the
shoot indoors, with less than ideal lighting and backgrounds. In the
end it was a more informal shoot than I normally do. I plan to shoot
Cruiser again (the "good" kind of shoot, LOL) in the spring.

Not only did we have ample snow on fall color leaves, we had plenty of
snow on the ground too!

My photos from The Mares Nest, including some fall color shots (with and
without snow) can be seen at:

<blush>

I am planning to make another trip to PA and neighboring regions next
spring, and set up portrait sessions at several area barns.

Oh, my God. Cruiser is BREATHTAKING. I can't believe that he is even
more gorgeous up close and personal. Brains, talent AND beauty? Boy Sue
and Nina do you have it all, with that horse. And JC -- your photos are
gorgeous. I would love to have portraits done of a ton of the horses! We'll
have to talk when you head this way in the spring.

aw bless
The beautiful boy looks like one of those earnest little schoolboys, with
that just slightly worried look in his eye, so eager is he to please!
"is this alright, Mum?" "am I being good Mum?" "is this what you want Mum?"

To be fair, Donal always said "This horse has not a mean bone in his
body." Cruiser is what he is and my personal mission is that he will
always be treated right, because he gives so much back.

But (and there's a difference here) Jeff calls him "my good student" He
prizes The Nose's ability to learn.

Great pics, as usual, JC, and great to see The Nose in his new home, Sue.
Looks Fabby

I groomed and tacked up Da Nose for Jeff Sunday. Had him in the indoor
(weather was gross and outdoor full of puddles) and Jeff stopped me.

"Hold him there, I want to look at him." He then smiled and said his
condition looked good. I concurred - he is very fit, good muscle tone
and he seems to have grown again! - and he has the most beautfiul
coat. It's like a summer coat. And not under lights. Well, I said, he
has a lot of blood." (OTOH I've had a lot of yakkie Tbs. LOL)

He's The Nose. There is something about him. Everyone loves The
Nose.

Hope to get JC off to see you 'uns. I suspect she will do awesome
thing with Scottish light. And yeah, she is really great to have
a conversation with.

Mo's horses are awesome. I used to go there to ride with Lee Tubman
once a month. Her place is fabulous.

Absolutely! Between my cold, the weather, and the schedule, fitting in
a trail ride just didn't cooperate this trip, and that's one of the
things I missed most, not getting out on a trail ride. Last fall Eileen
and I went for a ride at Jacobsburg, the previous trip we went to Bucks
- both were great rides!

Spring is really nice up this way. Very soft light.

She has her grand old man Gold Luck, a Sandro Hit son
(Shakespeare) and a line-bred Weltmeyer (Fhitzgerald) My
favorite is Gold Luck because IMO you can never have too
much Abundance in a horse Smile but I am fond of the Sandro
Hit line too.

It's a pretty farm too, tucked into the shadows of what passes
for mountains in PA.

We can also hit Old Dogwood Hill Farm in NJ too - they still
breed Thoroughbred sport horses (have branched out into
some crosses to the Holsteiner stallion Rollercoaster)

LOL. She told us a couple of years ago she had a choice between
acreage in the woods or a cornfield. She opted for the cornfield.

It is a beautiful place and she raises 'em right - outside in groups.

She performance-tests all of her mares and they don't get into
the breeding program until they prove their rideability.

Gold Luck is a proven sire of ammy-friendly dressage horses. He's
put a couple of mighty fine jumpers on the ground as well. But his
grandsire Abundance was pretty special. Sire of one of the best
show hunters of all time (Ruxton), fox-hunter, dressage horse,
eventer. And Al Steart drove him in a four-in-hand - usually with
three mares. Wonderful horse, an Absatz son. Not a big horse -
the "A" line is not that of mooselike proportions - but a very fine
horse who crossed wonderfully on Tbs.

Gold Luck is a beautiful mover and he reliably passes it on.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Gold Luck.

So when are you coming to the Pacific Northwet? Methinks I could
schedule a Mocha session.
