Hi
Any recommendations for buying a new DAB radio in the UK?
(e.g. Pure's "EVOKE flow", or EVOKE-2S or EVOKE-3S ?)
It must be portable. Mainly to be used for playing a classical music.
(but some voice and some rock/pop music)
- It must have a radio alarm - preferably with a gentle fade in.
- Decent reception is essential
- And a reasonable sound is important
- Pausing and rewinding music would be quite useful too.
Any thoughts?

Seriously, if you listen to radio to enjoy classical music then for
goodness sake don't buy DAB. FM is far better. Digital radio via
satellite, such as FreeSat is fine, and Freeview too will deliver a
better sound quality than DAB. Please, if you don't believe me then
don't buy a DAB radio without trying it out first and making a direct
comparison to FM at the same time. Believe me, you'll put your money
back in your pocket and realise that FM delivers far superior sound
quality. DAB classical music sounds as though it has been scrubbed
clean. All depth and resonance is washed away to deliver a bland,
whiter than white sound that you'll dislike. I daresay my opinion will
be the first of many, but do the 'blind sound test' before you buy
or insist that you can return the radio if it cannot match the quality
of your existing sets. |

If good sound quality is important then don't buy a DAB radio, buy a
Wi-Fi Internet radio instead, because the audio quality is a lot
higher on Internet radio than on DAB - that includes classical music
stations such as Radio 3 and Classic FM.

No. DAB is a broadcast system anyway, so it can't receive Internet
streams, so it wouldn't be able to receive music via Spotify. Wi-Fi
Internet radios will probably support Spotify in future, but they
don't yet. I think you can get a couple of Wi-Fi Internet radios that
support last.fm though.

On the radio-now website, you can find a list of DAB and internet
radios. (althou I have not found any "radios" that plays spotify, only
PCs, macs, iphones and android phones).

Hmm... thanks - but I'm not sure about all this.
Firstly radios like the "EVOKE flow", or "EVOKE-2S" both seem to be
able to do FM *as well* as DAB.
Secondly FM, whilst fine when properly set up is darned irritating
when it's not!
I mean this will be used as a PORTABLE radio and the signal quality is
likely to vary a lot.
Regarding Internet radio, well "EVOKE flow" can do it - in theory at
least.
One problem is that it's only a mono radio unless you attach the extra
speakers - but when you to do I cant
see how they clip together - which probaly means that they cant! So no
easy way to carry them around together.
Also I see the Evoke flow is getting VERY mixed reviews on amazon.
People seem to love it or but a supbstantial

....all very confusing.
The other thing that is confusing is spotify. I mean if the "Evoke
flow" can get online surely it ought to be able to do spotify too no?
(As an aside - have any of you guys used spotify.com? It really below
me away what you can get for free.
I only tried it briefly on a PC with a rubbish sound system, but
almost every record I could think of seemed to be there!
The main trouble is that I dont want to carry my laptop around the
house just to listen to some nice music!
