I'd like to put a shorter barrel on my 12 gauge, for home defense.
Would a 22" smooth bore slug barrel work for this purpose?

Sure, but shorter yet might be handier. If you live in the US your
shotgun can have a barrel as short as 18 inches. Rifle sights are a
great idea, the sturdier the better. If you're lucky SureFire makes a
flashlight foreend for your gun. If they don't you'll have to
improvise a weapon-mounted light. The lighter the gun gets the more
you'll want a serious recoil pad as well.

Yes, as long as it's got an open choke, not rifled. Usually the slug
barrels have rifle-type sights, too. Swap them out for fiber optic or
even tritium and you've got a good package. You might want to
consider a good recoil pad if all it has is a plastic butt plate.
This time of year you can usually get good deals on slug barrels, a
lot of guys are swapping out for fully rifled slug barrels and dumping
their old smoothbores.

I'd go with an 18" barrel (minimum legal length); they are widely sold
aftermarket - and very inexpensive.

Sure (but 22" isn't all that short). I believe a smooth bore slug barrel
would be a "Cylinder" (open) choke, but I'm not positive. That would be the
recommended choke for close range home defense work.
Good shooting,

#Hello John
RON L here
Thats kinda what I did, I got a 28" extra barrel for my Rem 870 and
the older lesser lookijng barrel I cut to 20" as long as your past 18
1/2 your legal most places then Re-Mount the bead and your all set!
Lot easier to get in small spaces and in a house with use 7 1/2 shot
for room size range and it will do that jobn, Skip slugs or 00 Buck
shot as it might Blow through walls and Lill others in next house or
appartment!

What brand/type shotgun?
A 22" barrel isn't much advantage over an 18.5"; My upland shotgun is
24", my pheasant gun is 28 and my daughters is 26". You're talking only
2-6" which is not much for a close-in/tactical use.
We have a Mossberg 590 (8 shot/18 1/2 in ) and even the pistol grip
accessory since we have some narrow hallways in our house.
Consider your situation (house & property layout), not just what is
cheap, unless you can't afford better.

No need to worry about sights if it's intention is going to be a house
gun. At those ranges if you can't point, shoot and hit with a 12 gauge,
the least of your concerns should be sights.
And 7 1/2 birdshot on a person with a heavy coat or multiple layers is
likely to piss him off real good.
Low recoil 00 buck placed well will git er done and at home ranges
(10-20 feet) you should be able to place all pellets on target (5-7
inches)

A defender owns whatever/whomever each and every pellet passes through
or stops in. On a head shot your 5-7 inch spread offers no margin for
error. Sights are a good idea even at conversational distances to
make sure your pattern is centered on your assailant.

I've seen pictures of an officer's chest after he was hit with a 12
gauge birdshot round at "home defense " distance, and I can certify that
the impact did far more than simply "piss him off". And he was wearing a
Kevlar vest ( thankfully ).

You can make a barrel just over 18" with a take-off barrel from a gun
shop. I got one with a bulge at about 26" for $5.That and a hacksaw,
and I had a nice, short barrel. Rounded the cut part, reinstalled the
bead. If home defense means down the hallway, you don't need a rifle
sight.
