Rio de Janeiro is in, Chicago is out for the 2016 Olympics. Now it
will be up to the U.S. television networks who will be bidding for
rights to those Summer Games to determine if that was a financial
mistake.
On the surface, it seems not. Had the Games gone to Madrid or Tokyo,
the absence of live prime-time programming would have hurt ratings.
The Brazilian city is one hour earlier than New York, enabling
organizers to get some live events in U.S. prime time.
Bidding is expected to begin some time after the 2010 Winter Games in
Vancouver. U.S. television rights are a major part of funding for any
Olympics competition. There are reasons other than TV money that Rio
de Janeiro was picked, but you can believe it was a major factor. |
