That's about all I know. A pre-reader or early reader book about a fly
who gives photographs of himself to his friends for Christmas. Published
before 1980.
Anyone remember it?

I'm looking, but need more info. Are you saying this is a
schoolbook? Or could it be a picture book?

A Fly Went By
Mike McClintock
Publisher: Random House Childrens Books
Publish Date: 1958-06-01
Or throw this in your google search box, and see if anything
tempting comes up. I can't find any matches for the story,
at least with picture/photographs/portraits mentioned:
"early reader" story "a fly" pictures -tedd
If it's a school book, maybe remembering something else
about the book (other stories, even what other books the
student read with this one).
If it's a picture book, was it flimsy or a hardcover...were
there other stories, anything about the picture on the front,
Scholastic book series (where the kids bought books from
the school, etc).
.....and sure it's a fly? (These stumpers often turn out to have
one or more bad clues in them....ha!)

I'm asking for someone else and working from their memory. She recalls
it as a picture book, large art with a short text. It was essentially a
story about conceit. The fly believes all his friends will love getting
portraits of him as gifts. They are shown reacting to getting this
horrible, bug-eyed head shot of a fly and are obviously straining to be
polite and thank him. They, of course, have been giving him good
presents. She doesn't remember how it resolves or if it was hardcover.
It was a favorite with her children and especially funny, because they
had an aunt who, on every gift-giving occasion, gave everyone portraits
of herself.
