Declining umpiring standards or......

I am surprised at some of the decisions that are being sent upstairs
in todays Oz V Windies match. I saw one (Fletcher) where the batsman
was at least two paces shy of the crease when the ball took the bails
off - a direct hit from Johnson. To remove any further doubt that may
have been in the umpire's mind, the batsman had not extended his bat
and had jumped and thus had both feet off of the ground at impact.

Now there's been another (Reifer, I think) where the batsman was at
least a pace inside the crease when the bails fell.

I'd not expect international umpires to be sending decisions like this
upstairs.

Is this a decline in umpiring standards bought about by an over
reliance on the 3rd ump?

Or is this being done so that everybody at the ground, and everybody
watching on TV, gets to see an Emirates advert whilst the 3rd ump
makes his deliberations?

the original blooper was rauf not giving johnson out caught behind off
a very noisy thick nick. oz would have struggled to get to 210 if he
had.

As a big fan of using more technology, I've no problem with them going
upstairs more often than not. It could be a lessening of standards,
but it could also be a mindset change.

In tv games the umpire doesn't get to stand square of the popping
crease, for fear of impeding the camera view. So maybe although we in
tv land can clearly see what has happened, it might not be too clear
to the umpire on the field.
Or it could be the advertising thing too.

TV Games? Aren't all games televised? Or do you mean something else?

I dont think umpiring standards are that far below what they have been. over
the decades. Its more a case of technology now showing up all the errors and
replay and replays and replays making you think umpires standards are
slipping.

As for going to 3rd umpire with runouts.............well I would rather
that then a king sized blooper , actually I am more surprised that batsmen
dont walk in cases like you have mentioned because they know they are out

Definitely.

Addition of further technology will only cause upiring to deteriorate
further.
