Here are the results of the two (2) Scrabble games played last night,
Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at the Dover Scrabble Club
(Delaware).
This week we tried something different. Only Louise and Lynn showed
up and I figured they might be game for "five-letter minimum"
Scrabble. I only found one partner who would go for that about twenty
years ago, and I thought it was great. It gets the game almost
completely away from those mindless, "connect-the-dot" plays of
pintsized words that probably make up 80% of tournament-style
Scrabble. It forces Scrabble into an almost purely anagramming
activity, which is what it should be.
Understand that "five-letter minimum" is a requirement on the *length*
of one of the newly formed words in a play. It does NOT require that
five tiles be played, just as in standard Scrabble II, where the
"three-letter minimum" rule can be satisfied by adding a single tile
to an existing two-letter word, for instance.
Surprisingly, there were only three plays in the two games in which a
player traded tiles. I got burned on KRAVAT, and playing AVATAR on my
next and final play wasn't quite good enough to sneak ahead.
Tile oddities: one game had 14A, 5F, 2J, and 2Q. The other game also
had 2Q, plus 7L and 12O. Every game is fresh and different!
Below you see *every* word on the final boards of the two games. That
is correct - only 4 two-letter words, and NO three- or four-letter
words. The average length of the words on the final boards was 5.5
letters. Comnpare that with the top-notch players in the recent
National Scrabble Championship, who could only manage 3.8 letters per
word. See:
