Yes, the legendary Romo Gracie won the event in 71.And his sister Rore
won the womens division a few years later. |

Rooker Gracie was her twin, and I think won the subsequent year

Yes. Unfortunately I am unable to speak of it with a non-initiate such as
yourself.
It's kinda like Fight Club. First Rule, and all that.
Better luck with your tryouts next time.

I know that you're joking here - but seriously, did Dux ever actually
even fight in the Kumite? I know that he *says* that he knocked out 56
guys in a row in a single tournament - but unless it was 56 guys
specifically stepping up to challenge him and all getting KOed (which
is an insane claim in itself) or he was fighting multiple opponents
all the way through (na, no-one is that deadly), the number of
combatants who'd need to be involved in a tournament requiring 56
fights on the way to the title would be absolutely ludicrous.
"Ludicrous" is a "Kumite" in China.
The fact that the Van Damme movie was set in China doesn't really mean
anything. Anyway, AFAIK it's been held in various locations around the
world over the years.
Dude, you're awesome. Look up Ollie Richman. He'll teach you some
deadly Tie Chee that you can use to compete in the Kumite. For a
price. 1000 cans of tuna.

No... the tournament you are referring to was a complete fabrication
- it never existed.
Huh? I thought that the controversy was over Dux's claimed
participation in the Kumite. |

Whoa. I've done some reading around on the web after reading your post
and I feel pretty stupid now.
Welcome to rec.martial-arts, the repository of the finest minds in the
martial arts world. Kinda.
I'm not a martial artist yet - but I've been looking into it over the
past few months.
Problem is that the only MA school within a convenient distance (I
don't have a car) is a Kuk Sool Won place. Now, from what I've seen of
the school and heard about the art in general, it seems to be one of
those McDojo-ish outfits that charges a lot of money to teach people
to *think* that they can fight and give them a false sense of their
own ability. I really don't want to waste my time with all that. Way
too many 10-year-old brown/black belts there too.
I found out about a Karate school a couple of towns over but I haven't
checked the place out yet. Teaches Wado-Ryu, apparently - which I'd
never heard of until last night.
Quote: I knew that 'Dux = big ole' faker' but I didn't realize that Dux
himself had originated the story about the Kumite (just thought that
he'd falsely claimed to have won it a few times and kicked a lot of
people's asses in the process).
Really?
I was under the impression that the
Kumite was a tournament that elite fighters generally didn't discuss
openly or admit to competing in because of the legal issues involved,
the shady, well-connected people funding/organizing it and the huge
tax-free cash prizes. Just never thought to question that. :(
Oh.
I'm sure that I've read other guys hinting that they'd been involved
in it over the years, but I suppose that this is all
post-Dux/Bloodsport. I did also think that there were some reliable
records of it actually taking place though, hence me idly wondering if
say for example, Helio or Royce Gracie had ever received invites in
years past.
Dux would and should avoid any Brazilian named 'Gracie' or any MMA
fighter with a clue. Any good MMA school will have a bunch of teenagers
who would rip Dux (in his prime or now) several new orifices and not
break a sweat doing it.
But would they be able to handle Dux dropping into the splits and
punching them in the balls? If they weren't wearing a cup, I mean. ;)
I hear that he's refined and improved the technique since he taught it
to Van Damme.

Absolutely true - in fact, I hosted the last one, and after all the
headaches, I'm never doing it again.
First, there was having to find a whiteboard big enough to write out
all the names for the 18,014,398,509,482,000 competitors necessary for
the winner to fight his way through 54 elimination rounds. Lunch
breaks were *murder*, lineups for the toilet were *insane* (even worse
after Winsor's ill-considered choice to eat that Supreme Triple-Chili
Dog from Wally's Wiener World), *and* I had to keep the whole thing
secret.
I think I've still got some leftover commemorative competition t-
shirts, if anyone's interested.
