Last week, I wrote a rather extensive post on the upcoming bidding for
the US rights for the 2014/2016 Olympics.
It included all of the networks that I thought were going to bid the
games especially if the 2016 Olympics are awarded to Chicago. Then
Sports Business Journal's John Ourand tweeted Tuesday night that the
CEO of News Corp. and owner of Fox, Rupert Murdoch laid a bombshell
and said that he wasn't interested in bidding for the Olympics feeling
they were a money loser. It certainly contrasts from last week when a
Fox Sports spokesman told USA Today's Mike McCarthy that, "The
Olympics are one of the premier sporting events in the world and we
will absolutely be a part of the bidding process when the time comes."
David Goetzl of Mediapost goes into detail on what Murdoch said and
what it could mean for the other parties who are interested in the
Olympics.
I asked John on Twitter if he thought Murdoch was somehow taking a
shot at NBC which says it makes money on airing the Olympics and he
replied that he wasn't sure if it was at NBC or at the International
Olympic Committee.
No matter, if what Murdoch said on Tuesday is true, then the chances
for ESPN/ABC has gotten better with a major hurdle out of the way. So
here are the revised odds for the bidding for the US TV rights to the
2014/2016 Olympics.
NBC Universal: Last week's odds to win the rights, 2-1. This week,
unchanged. NBCU remains the favorite to retain the rights, but faces a
stiffer challenge from ESPN/ABC now.
ESPN/ABC: Last week's odds to win the rights, 5-1. This week's odds
with Fox Sports supposedly out of the running, 3-1.
CBS/Turner: Last week's odds to win the rights, 25-1. This week's
odds, 15-1, but still at a long shot at this point.
I'm still skeptical that Fox won't be bidding for the Olympics. I have
a sneaking suspicion that when it comes time for the bids to be opened
that Fox Sports will be at the table. |
