Smith calls it right (IMO): http://www.cricinfo.com/iccct2009/content/current/story/425335.html

There is a lot of meaningless Cricket going on out there. I can recall
India touring BD a few years ago when SRT scored a double hundred and
Zahir Khan scored 70 odd runs.

If these meaningless tours are to be played then perhaps ICC should
let a B team play some of them. In the 70's when SL toured India we
used to play sort of a B side and test upcoming talent. I recall folks
at home talking about "Tony Opatha" making some Indian batsmen hop
around and "Anuora Tenekoon" playing some classy knocks.

India played just two Tests against England and just two against RSA
at home. And those four tests produced 3 results including a great
bowling performance (Steyn) and a fine 4th innings effort by India.
We could play more games if such silly tours are stopped. And equally
important, classy players and high intensity performers would be more
rested and perform at their peak more often.

You appear to be labouring under the misapprension that if left to their own
devices, the BCCI would come up with a fixture list of which you approve. I
think that's unlikely, as the upcoming seven-match odo series against
Australia shows.

Can somebody tell me what Smith is on about here? Who are the "we" who
played "a sort of a B side", presumably a Sri Lankan side, in the 70s.
Certainly it wasn't South Africa or anything to do with South Africa.

The "we" refers to India; it's the OP who's on about something, not
Smith. In the '70s, India played a few matches against SL that were,
IIRC, called "unofficial Tests" in the Indian media.

As some posters have pointed out subsequently, the problem of
diminished Test Cricket in India (and with India) is probably due to
factors other than too many inconsequential games being played. It
might have more to do with the popularity of the shorter versions of
the game in India.

Smith is perhaps correct - about too many inconsequential games - in
the context of RSA and perhaps Australia. But what ails Test Cricket
in India is a different malady. And many would neither agree that it
is a malady or that Test Cricket ails in India. So something attempted
nothing done.
