I thought the plan was to hold the men's ice hockey final in Vancouver
outdoors, to increase the seating capacity. However, the official
Vancouver 2010 website says it will be held indoors at GM Place
(temporarily renamed Canada Hockey Place).

When (and why) was the switch made?

There was never an intention to play it outdoors. The
climate is too mild and unpredictable. Rain is a distinct
possibility in the city in late February. The only larger
indoor stadium is BC Place and that wouldn't be available
due to the closing ceremonies the same day.

That's what I was thinking of - BC Place. (I wasn't aware that it was
domed.) I thought when the choice of Vancouver was announced (in
2003?) that somebody said they planned to hold the men's ice hockey
final there (probably in response to the Michigan-Michigan State game
played outdoors in late 2001 where almost 75,000 people attended), but
I can't find any reference to it. Then again, since it is enclosed, I
assume it would be too much of a problem having ice in it for hockey
in the afternoon and then clearing it out in time for the closing
ceremony that night.
