you believe SCUBA diving is irrelevant to this ng? You are Popeye and I

Many folks who come here looking to take lessons ask "the wrong
question". Don't ask what certification agency to go with, find out
how to decide what instructor to go with. Find someone you feel
comfortable with and who exhibits to you the ability to do more than
just "teach from the book" or do the "if was horrible when I learned,
it should be horrible now".

PADI OWSI 54909, 14 1/2 teaching, almost 24 years diving. Which makes
me a rookie around here.

Thats not bad at all. Only thing that I would suggest you clarify is

that of equalization - you tell people to equalize, but not *how to*.
Also, simple mask clearing might be good, so when they come up under the
dock with a mask full of water they can fix it. Wink

I figure that if you don't already know how to equalize, you probably
shouldn't be trying to teach yourself how to dive...

I dunno - I grew up by the sea, swam in 4 and 5m swimming pools, never
occurred to me that equalising would fix the slight pain in ears as
you dropped down. If someone suggested to me I plug my nose and try to
blow out through my ears I probably would have laughed - I've only got
a lungfull of air - I aint wasting it having it bubble out of my ears!

Well, did you teach yourself how to dive or take a course?

I spend a lot of time around pools growing up and equalizing the pressure
just seemed to come natural... As far as I can remember, I don't think
anyone ever actually taught me how to equalize...

Maybe that's because you have a hole in your head?

Me, I'm with Paul. I suffered years of ear and sinus pain from diving
to the bottom of pools and lakes and when snorkeling in the ocean.
Maybe I should have taken a snorkeling class? No one ever advised me
how to equalize since no one I knew knew how to equalize either. When
I took my first scuba class, learning how to get rid of the pain was
the most amazing revelation.

You're looking at it from the wrong end of a diving career - why on
earth would anybody on land want to equalize (to the extent required for
diving) and so the term is meaningless until someone first feels that
water pressure and pain on the ears. And then its a bit late for someone
encouraged by your essay to try out this diving lark to remember that
they forgot to look up what that equalize bit meant.

Personally, I don't think that someone should try to teach themselves how
to dive unless they are already extremely comfortable around water.

Totally agree

That said, there's always 'oh and you really need to know this' which is
why for most people a basic open water course from any agency is a must.

I taught a guy OW and the following week he bought a full set of gear
and told me he was going diving off his rib solo with only his wife on
board...and you think 'oh fuck' but he came back happy having spent his
time pootling along at 4m..
So I spose you need to realise that most people have a bit of sense,
Darwin takes care of the rest.

I always had problems free diving and I knew how to clear it is the slower
descent of scuba that allows it. Driving over the mountains here I need to
clear my ears on descent not usually on the way up.
