First Look at a CGI Smurf!
--------------------------------------
This first image of a CGI Smurf from Sony Pictures Animation's
upcoming Smurfs movie was posted online last night, but we
had to take a few more steps to make sure it was the real deal.
It turns out that the studio ran the promo image, of which you
can find a scan below, in a magazine recently.
http://www.comingsoon.net/nextraimages/smurfsscan.jpg
Opening in theaters on December 17, 2010, the film will be
directed by Raja Gosnell. "The Smurfs" were created in 1958 by
Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known throughout the world
as Peyo.
The CGI Smurf looks good. Pity they're stuffing the movie up by mixing
live-action actors in as well. |

A live action Gargamel might work better than an animated one, depending
upon how realistic the look is. They would have to make it cartoony to get
an animated Gargamel to look right. And I also get the impression that this
movie will involve kids who discover and have to help the Smurfs save their
environment.

Oh God! That souns like a clone of "Arthur and the Minimals" or the
live-action "The Borrowers" movie. That adds another couple of minus points
to the tally that's already in negative territory for this movie. |

And given Raja "Scooby-Doo" Gosnell and the nonsensical stoner-callout
Scarface joke* we get in the ad, I get the impression Sony is planning
to follow Warner's lead in taking the back door and deploy their "Snotty
retro-kitsch" safety-nets just in case.
....We have been warned. (And not by Harry Knowles, this time.)

Since this seems to be Janssenese for "They're screwing with
another Hanna-Barbera creation!" allow me to clear something up: The
Smurfs are *not* a Hanna-Barbera creation! They were created by
Belgian artist Pierre "Peyo" Culliford in 1959, and had a long-running
comic book series; if anyone screwed with them, it was Hanna-Barbera.

Of course they did. Screwing up other people's work is about all Hollyweird
is good at since they ALWAYS make idiotic changes when making a movie or TV
show "based on" something else.
But, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon show is the most widely recognised version of
The Smurfs, so Hollyweird now creating (probably) another screwed up version
by trying to go live-action / CGI is simply continuing the current trend of
idiotic "remakes" / "reboots" / "reimagings" by the current crop of
talentless hacks that are overflowing the industry these days. |

Hanna-Barbera as part of Hollywood, talk about wishful thinking!

There's "Hollyweird" yet again! I guess some people just aren't
smart enough to say it properly . . .

Hollyweird is a generalised term simply meaning the movie / TV
"entertainment" industry (although many of them have forgotten what that
word means). |

I remember reading the Spanish traslations of them as a kid; they
were susprisingly faithful to original storylines up until Baby Smurf,
when things really started going off track. The famously most notable
change: the Black Smurf Plague was changed to the Purple Smurf Plague

No doubt a product of our politically correct times!
Given their 50 year status, it's a shame if we may never get those
books republished up here to coincide with the film since I'd rather
have them out for a new generation who might want to find out more
about these guys outside the nostalgia kick. |

Talking of Black Smurfs ... here's a link to a PDF of a Star Trek x Smurfs
