For your viewing pleasure, why wait for the Oscars to do a montage of
special fx when it can be done online--and not make you wait for the Best
Picture Oscar?

Without further ado, movie effects--from 1900 to 2008:

-- Ken from Chicago (who likes the first one directly showing the initial
drawing leading up to the effect--a nice reminder that fx are ultimate made
by people using devices not merely by the devices themselves)

They going to show how they peaked around 1990 and went downhill from
there?

That was awesome!

I'd still rather see what Chuck Workman could've done with it...Often
imitated, never duplicated.  :)

Well, yeah, but Workman isn't going to waste his time on You Tube. :-(

Mebbe he'll see this and think of it as a challenge.

Wouldn't it be the other way around?

Jackie Chan is kinda like Buster Keaton?

Keaton did, after all, preceed Chan.

Um, that *wasn't* a special effect... 0_0

You mean a "visual" effect. Keaton really did have a wall falling around him
so it wouldn't count. And I don't think there was anything particularly
groundbreaking in A Trip To The Moon, at least nothing that hadn't been done
before in other works.

I'm sure there were a few effects left out. No Close Encounters for
instance, even though the ship flying over was quite impressive for it's
time. The carousel from Logan's Run was also quite complex; this was before
blue screen and was done with a giant carousel. And there was no Terminator
stuff, although I don't think any of that was original by the time the films
were made. They also used the original Ten Commandments rather than the
Heston film everyone is familiar with. And no Titanic.

They seemed to be more interested in the effects rather than the films from
which they came. Star Wars was groundbreaking in it's effects (ILM was
created by and for Star Wars), as were Roger Rabbit and Tron.
