simichrome polish. A paste in a tube. At hardware stores. Great stuff
for polish. |

You didn't say what kind of metal. For most base metals (brass, chrome,
etc.), any commonly-available polish made for the purpose (Brasso, etc.)
is almost completely non-destructive. (Assuming you don't aggressively
use a buffing wheel ...)
