I did NOT believe that Disney would really open "Ponyo" in over 900
theaters, up to the point when they really did open the film in over 900
theaters , including one in downtown Greenville. I caught it on my
birthday last Sunday, with the theater being less than half full. "Ponyo" had
a modest per-theater-average performance of around $3900. For what this is
worth, "Ponyo" became the first Ghibli movie to break the top 10 on the US.
boxoffice weekend. But the Miyazaki movie of course was a stunning success
with critics:

The movie's been taking in about half a million each weekday. It's already
passed "Howl's Moving Castle" on the anime all time boxoffice list. I'm really
hoping that Disney will keep it in theaters long enough so that the excellent
word of mouth will give "Ponyo" strong land legs.
The theater numbers for both "Ice Age 3" and "Up" have now been greatly
reduced. I really doubt now that IA3 will ever reach the $200M mark, or that
"Up" will reach the $300M mark.
"Evangelion 1.0" returned to theaters. You can follow that film's
schedule at:

Bah. It's a mediocre performance. 4k a screen is comparable to a
blockbuster film in its THIRD WEEK OF RELEASE. Certainly not worthy
of an art-house film opening, and not really worthy of ANY release on
opening weekend. Should've been 8k AT LEAST, 10k would have impressed
myself and Disney.
Not that I should be complaining. I have yet to see the film, and I
couldn't confirm the presence of any Japanese-language screenings in
metro Washington D.C. I'll suck it up and support My Animation
Emperor and Vicar, Miyazaki-sensei, but I can morosely state that I'm
profoundly disappointed in this development.

They can't all be Finding Nemo...

DC Anime Club has a screening pretty soon. Can't promise anything.
Hopefully, this film won't require a fanboyish familiarity with the
entire series like some crappy anime films (coughFMAOnePiececough).
Terrence Briggs, not allowed to visit Facebook and Youtube in the jury
lounge. Don't get me locked up, friends!
Peace to you... |

Seriously? You were expecting an 8K opening? With "Ponyo", the issue
was more than just U.S. audiences still being not that familiar with the Ghibli
label. It's that the movie was a kiddie movie. True, a high quality movie
that older audiences could enjoy watching, but this movie was still made with
young children as the intended primary audience. How can such a movie have
the general audience appeal needed for a blockbuster's performance? I
wouldn't have expected "The Pirates who Don't Do Anything" or "Piglet's Big
Movie" to do blockbuster numbers either.
As for art house numbers, they're big because the number of theaters is
so small. Therefore the people that really want to see the movie are all
crammed into a few theaters, instead of spread out over 900 screens like with
"Ponyo".

Actually, I understand that these new NGE movies are shot-for-shot
remakes of the TV series, with only a few new scenes added. So it seems you
don't have to have seen the TV series as seeing these movies will be the same
as seeing the series.

Is that so? I'm curious to see what they're going to come up with.
I had assumed that this would be mostly a word for word remake of the TV
series. That made me wonder, how are they going to handle the last two
episodes? As there's already a movie adaptation of those eps: "End of
Evangelion". Are they going to actually remake EoE, even though EoE is one of
the most highly praised anime movies ever made? Or are they simply going to
cover episodes 1-24 in the four movies, and then retroactively label Eoe as
"Evangelion 5.0: End (of) Evangelion"?
