Boom... let's get back on an even keel, you and me...
You're dealing with a server on which the administrators decide how
much old junk to save. If google decides to delete anything older
than, say, six years, it's just gone.
The only choice is to find another news server that has older
archives.
www.armory.com has some of the oldest rec.pyro archives available.
There are some gaps in the history, but it has virtually all the
information from the beginning of the group until 1996, then more
spotty coverage.

Ok... let's run that wagon. What are you looking for, and how far
back?
Try a specific, then we'll work on more general things.

Agreed, my apologies for what I said.

Here's the oldest post I can find with my name on it: I guess they've
gutted the archives prior to March of 2001.

made in July and
August.
I think they've "splattered" the archives across other databases,
because when I "search all groups" I get posts all the way back to
March of 2001. When I search only rec.pyrotechnics, I get only recent
posts.
Perhaps, among "groups", they include archives of groups, under
different root names, but still showing as rec.pyrotechnics in the
posts themselves.

appear. Like I said, when I type a keyword in the search box, only
the most recent will show as a result.
Typing in Lloyd will only give me hits for the past few months.
Granted, there has been very little activity on this group.
There's obviously a honkin' big bug in the google search.
If I search on "fiscalinfo" and "rec pyrotechnics" AND I "sort by
relevance", I get 1070 posts and threads I can actually read all the
way back to 1995.m (fiscalinfo.com was an old domain of mine)
If I take that same (active) search result, and merely click on "sort
by date", I get FOUR threads from this year.
They've munged the database.

I think 1990 was the start of the rec.pyrotechnics charter, so that is
probably as far back as it goes.
All the data still appears to be available through the two feeds
google uses, but the search engine is broken.
It's a slow process, but you can sort of back into a search by
bringing up a month's posts (about this group, then select the
specific month's link) then using your browser's "Find on this page"
edit function.

Here is just one of many that popped up searching "Lloyd E. Sponenburgh"
from that page.
Like I say you have to fill in the form right. "Only return results from
rec.pyrotechnics" is almost at the bottom of the larger form. Just fill in
that part then click on "advanced search.
Back to 1995 in this one Lloyd.

Mat... (matt? or M.A.T.) First, slide on over to
rec.pyrotechnics. This area (alt.engr.explosives) really is for explosives,
expressly, and pyrotechnics is much, much more. Rec.Pyrotechnics is
dedicated to the discussion of the art of display fireworks. You'll also
find there a (an) FAQ describing a lot you'll find interesting, and best, a
list of literature and sources. C'mon over! LLoyd
