Looking for a camping safe...

Does anyone know of a safe that can be used while camping?

I'm thinking of a container which emits a loud alarm if moved or
tampered with in any way. This could be useful but I cannot find
anyone who sells such a thing. It should be very lightweight and
depend on the audible alarm for security.

It's as something in which to store camera, camcorder and the like
while away from the tent. The tent will be in a populated area so an
audible alarm should be a suitable deterrent.

Failing that is there another option? If all else fails I'll just have
to carry valuables in a rucsac but it would be handy not to have to
keep them with me all the time.

Camoflage?

A person isn't likely to steal something that they don't even know is
there.

I'd have thought an audible alarm would be an incentive for people to go
rummaging in your tent to find what's making the bloody noise and
destroy it.

I can also imagine you tripping over it in the middle of the night and
making yourself *very* unpopular.

How far is your vehicle from your tent?

Not sure if you are being ironic. The unit wouldn't be armed if the
owner were in the tent and it wouldn't make a noise unless moved.

An alarm will at some time go off when you don't want it to and piss

everybody else off. Maybe you could make something before you go, ie buy a
safe like this
http://cpc.farnell.com/defender-security/df00001/safe-key-lock-200x200x150mm/dp/SR06728,
drill a hole through the back of it and twist something like this through it
http://sportsequip.co.uk/acatalog/info_AN400.html. With the safe door open
you can screw the ground anchor in then when the door's shut the anchor
can't be unscrewed because the safe just spins on it and without serious
digging it wont come out. Not many opportunist thieves will want to spend a
lot of time in your tent digging even if they've got a spade with them.

Instead of a typical siren, perhaps the alarm could be hooked up to a
loudspeaker that yelled: *Attention! Attention! Free bags of weed! I
repeat: Free bags of weed!*

That should bring some people runnin.

Hi

I once saw something advertised for use on a beach when you wanted to
swim. It was a strong bag with 2 compartments. You filled the bottom
compartment with sand and locked it; you then put your valuables in
the top compartment and locked that. Anybody trying to steal the bag
would find it too heavy to lift because of the weight of the sand.
Soil or stones would obviously work just as well. When you wanted to
leave, you just unlocked the bottom and emptied the sand out.

I haven't a clue who made them - or even whether they are still
available - but a search on Google may turn something up; or something
similar would be fairly simple to make.

Otherwise have you tried "PacSafe". They have all sorts of security
products.

Pretty long hike. Maybe you could get a bicycle lock and lock a container in
a tree.

Keeping your valuables with you is the only way of being sure of their
location. When I am travelling the camera goes with me all the time,
besides you never know when a great photo might happen.

There are small devices on the market that will make a noise if moved.
Get one of those and attach it to whatever secure storage you choose.

If you're not taking the camcorder with you, why bring it in the first
place?
As for the camera, the same applies, but if you're in the woods or doing
hikes away from camp, shouldn't you have the camera on you to snap what you
see? Just me, I guess.

Anyways, you could use a small box safe (you can get on-line or at Target or
Wally World or K-Mart)

You could use one of these small safes put in your trunk and just lay a
personal alarm on top of it, such as the AL-2 personal alarm found on this
link. The alarm should only go off if the safe is disturbed.

http://www.everysafe.com/Honeywell-Safes-2079-HNW1031.html

There's a portable safe called a Yelpie, but it's only big enough for cell
phones, wallets, etc. ( www.yelpie.com )

You can go to www.stealarmor.com but these run about $450-$500.

You might check Campmor.com They might have something. Or you could just
use a motion sensor like those available at www.absoluteautomation.com

Look at one of the dingus's that they sell for _hotel_ travelers to
hang on the room door. It screams if the door is jiggled.

Make _sure_ you turn it off when you *are* around. Smile

I think this is the best idea. remember the combination and NO keys.

You could also dig a 6 foot hole and cover it up.

There are child monitors, but you would have to have good batteries.
Alarms are problematic.
