Haven't seen Ashocker umpire much recently, but there he was at the Ireland
v New Zealand match. It wasn't a very interesting match and doesn't deserve
many column inches, but I couldn't let the occasion pass without noting the
sheer horror I experienced when he gave Aaron Redmond out lbw. Not that he
was the only one - both the television and CI commentators said they thought
it was out on first viewing, which I thought strange because even live it
was obvious to me that the ball hit him comfortably outside off stump.
Whoever said that NZ should make the semi-finals may need to think again in
light of their injury crisis - it's hard to imagine them progressing without
Ryder, Taylor and Vettori.
Ireland were sadly uncompetitive, to the point that the match was pretty
much over as a contest after two overs. Niall O'Brien looked to be too
injured to keep wicket effectively.
Oh, and Redmond deserves a mention. He only joined the squad on the evening
before the match, had to wear one of Brendon McCullum's shirts (hardly going
to fit Ryder's kit) with black tape used to change the number from 42 to 48,
yet managed to hit seven boundaries in the first two overs of the match.
Indeed as late as the 15th over with 148 runs already on the board Redmond
was still the only player to have hit a four.
