Is there a pace-clock where you swim? After turning, note where the hand
is, then divide by your average speed per lap; this requires that you can
a) see the clock, and
b) swim at a constant speed.
Ah cool never thought of that (and me with the creative ideas
website!)
When I'm swimming well I sort of go into a trance so it's easy to lose
track of lengths

I use the 90000 SportCount Chrono 100 ($39.95). It fits on your finger
like a ring, and you tap the button when you start, when you do a turn,
and at the end. It counts your lengths, times each length, gives you
total time, average time per length, time for your fastest length and
which length it was, time for your slowest length and which length it
was, and then lets you cycle through each individual length (which can
be very useful if you're doing a longer distance swim and want to map
out how your speed varied).
The 90010 Combination SportCount ($29.95) does the same thing except
that it doesn't let you look at your time for each length, but only
tells you how many lengths you swam, the total time, the average time
per length, and the times for your fastest and slowest lengths (and
which lengths they were).
If all you want is to count your lengths (with no timing), you can also
get the 90040 SportCount LapCounter ($24.95). But it's hard for me to
conceive of why anyone wouldn't want to spend $5 more and get the timing
info.
All of these are available through their website:

I use a watch set to timer/countdown/repeat. I set the watch for the
100 repeat time I want say, 1:20/100. At the end of each cycle, it
resets, and a beep goes off...in the case of my watch (a columbia) the
beeps last for about 20 seconds. If I hit the wall ahead of my repeat
time, I hear the beeps on the next turn(rarely hear it while swimming)
so, at the 125yd mark for the 1st hundred. If I'm behind, I can hear
the beeps as I start the turn so I know to pick up the pace a little.
What I try to do is "push the beep" around to the next 50 so I'm hearing
it on the 150 instead of the 100 and so on. Works for me |

I forgot to mention, it also counts number of repeats up to 99 so at any
time I can see how many 100's I've done and I know if I'm on an even or
odd length. |

I always choose the distance I plan to swim, say 2000. Then there is
more to think about, i.e. the distance remaining, as well as the
distance swum. If I am in a 25m pool, I count 50s. In a 50m pool I
count 100s. Then I am either counting to 40 or 20. I think about this
while I am swimming, and I think about my stroke and my kick. If I
don't focus my mind on the se things, I lose track of the count. |

OK, I want the first one, but I don't feel I can afford it. So either
look for a timex iron man on ebay, or find an old school timex
expedition with the 99 lap counter. These work great and do all the
things the first thing does above, except keep track of average length
per lap. I spent $19.99 on mine--I know that is not a big savings but I
need to really watch every little thing these days, especially since I
want to take some private lessons.

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish, but I've used a
"rotation" of strokes to make the things I had to count fewer overall,
e.g., swim a length breathing right, a length breathing left, and two
lengths breathing bilaterally, and now you're counting 100's instead of
25.

I think it isn't possible. The count is in your short term memory. If
you stop thinking about it, it goes away. |

One thing I do is intervals. I may do 4 laps at a faster pace and 1
lap recovery. I don't stop after the recovery lap and keep going. You
can vary the interval and the strokes as Steve suggests. For example,
you can do 4 laps free and 1 back. Other variations can be 4 laps
focusing in your kick with 1 relaxing, 4 more focusing in your
recovery and 1 relaxing. You dont have to do the 4-1 ratio either. You
can do 100 mtrs sprint and 100 recovery, or whatever combination. I
like the 4-1 ratio because I usually swim 60 laps or 120 lengths
(3000YDS) So, I do 12 sets of wahtever 4-1. |

I disagree.
Yes the count is short term memory, but if it takes you 30 seconds to
cross the pool and you refresh the count in your head every 6 seconds or
so (5x) you won't forget and you can easily increment on the flip.
When people try to count laps versus lengths I can see it being more
difficult to not lose track (for me anyway) |

I am sooo glad I am not in the lane next to you. <g>
Yes, I can usually hear those high-pitched beeps and they drive me nuts.
Glad it works for you - my watches usually die pretty quickly if I use
them that way in the pool and ocean. |

No, Steph, up and back to a starting point is 1 lap. A length is from the
starting point to the end of the pool. A mile in a 25 meter pool is roughly
32 laps. A lap is defined as a circuit and always has been.
It's easier to remember the laps if you only have to go to 32 to make a
mile, after all.
