Keep your cat indoors...

Dear Cat Lovers,

Please keep your cats indoors. It is a fact that outdoor cats only live
about half as long as indoor cats due to the many dangers - mainly cars.
Other dangers include licking antifreeze from leaking vehicles (one quarter
teaspoon can cause acute renal failure), other animals, eating garbage,
freezing or starving to death, and abuse from people. Another little-known
danger is people and organizations who trap stray animals for medical
research. My vet cringes when she gets a customer who lets their cat roam
outside. If your cat is used to going outside and gives you a hard time when
you try to keep him in, there are some things you can do. If you have a back
yard, it IS possible to fence it in so the cat can't escape. One way is to
attach chicken wire fencing to the top of an existing fence. Bend it in a
little so it faces the inside of your yard. If the cat climbs up to the
chicken wire, it's weight will pull the chicken wire in even more and the
cat won't be able to get out. After a while, the cat will stop trying.
You'll have to monitor the cat at first because the cat will naturally look
for "weak" spots. I did this with my cats successfully. Another thing to do
is to have a window the cat can look out. Make sure it has a screen to
prevent falls. Bring some plants inside. Check with your vet about which
plants are safe - some can kill a cat if it eats it. Try training your cat
to walk on a leash so you can take him out for walks. Some cats will let you
do this, but you might have to try a few times. The number one killer of
cats is getting hit by a car. The second is kidney failure. At least THAT
can be treated, for a while anyway. Nothing much you can do if it gets hit
by a car.
