I'm trying to find an Irish song I heard once but remember very little
about. All I remember is that it had a nice melody, it was sad and it
was probably in a minor key. I had the impression that it must be an
Irish classic. I know I'm not giving you much to go on but maybe
someone can save me the next five years of trying to find this song.
I'll know it when I hear it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Step forward about 5,000 Irish songs for identification... you really
need to give more clues!

I guess most Irish songs are laments because of
Ireland's sorrowful history. I find this a bit sad
and it seems to be continuing (despite the passage
of 75 years) - like the Fields of Athenry. My date
for the latter song may be wrong - I never heard
the song until about 4 years ago

So, if we made a list I guess it would be just a
bit short of David's 5,000.
If you could remember segments of the tune it
might help. I believe quite a few Irish songs have
the same air - like Danny Boy and John McCormack's
When you and I were Young (this last one was
dragged from a 30 year old memory). I think the
air of Fainne Geal an Lae also has other songs.

That's my whole 2c worth Smile

good grief...

"Kilkelly, Ireland" by Peter Jones immediately came to mind. Lyrics and
recordings are easily found through searches.
