Looks like another warm one tomorrow. Fingers crossed that it's not anywhere
near as bad as last year's craziness.

Last year I think the organizers should have cancelled the event.
I cannot believe they did not realize that conditions were unfavorable
and that they ( as well prepared as they might have been ) were not
ready to handle what happened.
Certainly there are way too many people planning to do 26 miles
"however they need to" and do not accept personal responsibility for
knowing when to bow out and wait for a different event.
Once marathons starting going past 5 hours and keeping the course
officially open after that time frame ... it turned into the
"survivathon" era at least IMHO. |

Last year I think the organizers should have cancelled the event.
I take it you mean before it started, rather than in the middle? I don't
think they should have canceled the race just because it was hot.
If lightening, thunder, hurricane, cyclone, tornado, etc., yes, cancel
it. The forecast was for it to get hot and they did not react and ran
out of water. Now that was not just dangerous but stupid if not ignorant
If they prepared with fluids and medical personnel, they should have
stressed the heat but offered plenty of water and advise people to run
slower etc.

From the results, 2:06:25, only 2:26 off the world record, must have been
good conditions for the first two hours of the race.
On this webpage
http://www.chicagomarathon.com/CMS400Min/Chicago_Marathon/press_center/inde
x.aspx?id=6247
I see that 'only' 31,401 runners finished the race, but they had capped the
race at 45,000. Does this mean that nearly a third of the participants
either never showed, or never finished inside the time limit? It seems
really large number. In Berlin, the comparitive numbers are 35,820/40,000.
If there were really 45,000 starters, there must have been some hard
conditions in the later parts of the race.
