Long run postponed to early this coming week. Signed up for bimbler's

hopefully rebuild a decent running base slowly into next year; this
having been an off year due to the knee injury.

9/29 4 miles 12:51 min/mile
9/30 5 miles 12:58 min/mile
10/2 4 miles 13:26 min/mile
10/4 10 miles 13:16 min/mile (on South Mountain)

Thus ends week 2 of the four-week taper. Of the four times we've run on
South Mountain, this was my best. I attribute this primarily to the
cooler temperature today, and secondarily to my improved conditioning,
however marginal that may be.

I hit a new high for this year this week ( I think ? ) somewhere
around 80 miles.

Probably still mad about being sick last saturday for the "big race".

I had 40 in thru friday. 15 miles saturday and 25 today in about 3:45
on the flat trails around here. Not pushing it just dogging around
with a bunch of 8:30's ...

Felt pretty good running 25 miles today temperature was nice and
weather ideal.

Wife and daughters off all afternoon to see "Stomp" ... clearing a big
empty timeslot! Would have tried going a little faster but legs a
little flat from 15 on saturday.

Good luck all!

Goals: Keep up training, bite the bullet and run the Big Tesuque
trail run at the end of the week.

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 5x(400 at 5:36 pace, 400 walking recovery)
Wednesday: 90 minutes trail run in hills, easy pace
Thursday: 50 minutes trail run, hills, easy pace
Friday: rest
Saturday: Big Tesuque! This was my highest altitude run to date, my
first experience of running in thin air. rms already described it the
race, so I'll leave it at that I was able to keep up with him for
about the first mile or mile and a half, but after that my run-walk-
run cycle had more walk in it than his. Made it to the top in 1:18,
finish in 2:05. If this year's food amenities were below the standard
of last year, last year must have been very, very good, coz that
breakfast burrito at the end was the most delicious thing I've ever
eaten.
Sunday: not sure yet --- but it's gonna be barely more than a warm-up
(trying to get my 17 year old daughter to start running, and she's
interested --- so today we'll just do a light family jog, I think).

Goals for next week: run a bunch, start a gradual increase in base
mileage. No races planned anytime soon.

Greetings rec.runners! Please tell us about your training week and goals.

Coming off the marathon last weekend, a couple days cycling and one 4mi run
during the week.

Saturday: Big Tesuque trailrun! 11.6mi up and down from 10k to 12k feet
and back. A gorgeous day with acres of yellow and red aspen at the
trailhead, though we were above them for most of the race. I paid more
attention pre-race to massaging my tight right hamstring, and it gave no
trouble this time, and I ate gels and drank frequently. On the way up,
walk, run, walk, run, all the way to the radio towers on top (something like
1:09 split), then a turnaround and fairly strong descent with only a couple
pauses to a 1:53:xx finish (7minutes better than last year), just behind a
female agegroup winner, who caught up with me the last couple miles; I
repassed her, but she was too strong and pulled ahead (I yelled that at her:
'you're too strong!' as she went by) and we had a good laugh and highfive at
the finishline. Tom finished strong a few moments later, we chatted briefly
and I left. The amenities were below last year's high standards, but the
coffee was just as good!

Sunday: Sandia Shadows 10k trailrun. It rained all night and into the
morning, ending only around 6am, and I was about to bail on the event, but
I'd been careful to massage, stretch, and eat extra after Saturday's run as
I'd done these same back to back runs last year, decided what the heck, and
it was overcast but clearing as I arrived. Alas, the RD had cancelled the
12k due to the rain, and instead had us run two loops of the 5k course: my
first 10k! Definitely an easier course than the 12k, which features more
variety in terrain and hillclimbing, but still on the famous granite sand,
rising for the first half and descending to the end. I probably started a
bit too quickly, but walked only very briefly a few times on hills to down
some powerade, and finished strong for a 41:xx time. Last year's 12k time
was around 1:15, so I'd have certainly beaten that. A good day!

Wow congrats running a 10k in 41 and change after a long run
yesterday!

A little hard for me to understand how you had some walking but
averaged what 6:40 a mile ... must have really been cooking when you
weren't walking!

Sun: 10.5 mi.
Mon: Off
Tues: 8 mi.
Wed: 8 mi.
Thurs: 7 mi.
Fri: Off.
Sat: 7 mi.

I think I'm at a good mileage base to run
a marathon. I'll amp it up, probably two months
prior to the marathon I'll run, to about 10-15
additional miles. Goal: Run marathon sub 3:20

You're quite right to question this, I've mistaken a '1' for a '7'
before running by race time displays, a 47:xx would be more likely for me,
and I didn't check my watch. I try to doublecheck before posting times, but
unlike last year, the RD didn't bother printing out times as runners came
in, telling us to just check the website, and there's nothing there yet.

#$^% ankle acting up again after doing too much last weekend. As of this
Sunday, I'm icing it daily.

Mon: 2 easy (ankle a bit tweaked from bigger than average 30 mile weekend)
Tue: 10.5 easy, 1800' climb
Wed: 8 easy, 1000' cliimb
Thu: 11.0 easy, 1900' climb
Fri: 7 easy, 1000' climb
Sat: 12 easy, 2000' climb, med + 1.5 miles quick downhill racing xc college
guys. **
Sun: 12 easy, 2700' climb, one 7 minute hill climb surge (had to drop some
MTBers)

62.5 miles 10,400' climb.

** Got 'em to the bottom of the hill, then backed off, if I'd charged up the
last climb I would have nothing left for tomorrow's longer run. They must
have been under orders not to go too fast -- nothing else makes sense...

Runs: 6
Miles: 39.8
Long: 9
Time: 6:04

First of three taper weeks. Marathon 10/19. In lieu of a tune-up race I
did a couple of pace practice runs - 7 miles at (planned) marathon pace.
I'm having trouble keeping the pace down so more practice is needed. I
guess that's good news compared to the alternative.
