I've received notice that my Comcast newsgroup service will be
discontinued
later in October. I can access newsgroups through Google, but I'm
wondering
how to get Xnews to work with Google usenet service.
Google's web-based usenet archive is just that: web-based. There is
no way to access it outside of their web-site.
There are a number of free news servers out there that you can use.
Some require you email them asking for an account, some do not. Here
is a short list:
news.aioe.org (no login required)
allnews.readfreenews.net (no login required but site is having server
problems right now so may be down)
freetext.usenetserver.com (no login required)
news.mixmin.net
news.readfreenews.net
tnews.arcor.de (user/pw test/test)
news.albasani.net (email login required)
news.datemas.de (email login required)
reader.greatnowhere.com (email login required, having DSN problems
reaching them right now)
reader.motzarella.org (email login required)
For a one-time $4 set-up fee, there is also Teranews
(free.teranews.com).
For $3 per month, I like Agent Premium News (APN). Go to
http://www.foreteinc.com to sign up. I rarely use more than the
cheapeast plan there and never more than the next level up (I
auto-renew so there are a few months I spend $6 instead of $3, but
that extra costs goes for a full 30 days, my renewal date changes if I
auto-renew due to overage).
Hope that helps!!
