Quite a liberal definition of "British Invasion." Also of "greatest" and
"100."

Freddie and The Dreamers over The Pretty Things, Them. Georgie Fame, Graham
Bond, Creation, The Big Three and Johnny Kidd?

No Bonzo Dog Band at all?

No doubt, Raja bases this opinion on little beyond the top half-dozen or
so names.

As for me....

Phew. Regardless of "accuracy" issues, I think that list wore out its
welcome around #50 or so. There just aren't 150 acts worth remembering.

The Creation sure got screwed, eh? They could easily be 30 or 40 slots
higher.

So why bother posting it at all, if all the usual suspects are there
and we know who they are?

All of them cant be usual suspects.  Only the ones that the near top
will be. What a maroon.

But the others (the vast majority) are by no stretch "great" - so what
is the list after all: either it is a reiteration of common knowledge or
an insult to musical taste and a sense of cultural history. Either way -
the list bites.

dmh

you still havent posted your own top 100 british invasion list that is
better than the one I posted. You are a fuckface, pretending to be
cool.

You still haven't answered at least 1,000 questions posted to you.

I won't call you fuckface because I need to stop kicking you when
you're down (which is always).

Now, practice what you preach and we'll all get along just fine.

Now you're talking.

If "pop" is broad enough to encompass the above, Elvis has to be on the

What about James Taylor (your personal tastes aside)?
Neil Sedaka?
Sam Cooke?
Wilson Pickett?
Curtis Mayfield?
Otis Redding?
Marvin Gaye?
Carole King?
Joni Mitchell?
Judy Collins?
Marshall Crenshaw?

I'm not saying I'd put *all* of these on my list. They're merely
suggestions.

(p.s...I realize Joni Mitchell's Canadian. I'm taking a continental
approach.)

It was a personal list. And if you consider Beck not having enough time
in the limelight, jeez, was Crenshaw EVER in the limelight? And he never
impressed me. Too sterile and wimpy. If I need "that," I'll reach for
the dBs or Chris Stamey (among others).

I also left out Billy Joel, whom would be a strong candidate for a more
"objective" list.

The difference is that I'm not pretending my view is anything but
personal. I only phrased it in terms of "greatest" because I was riffing
on the thread's subject line. And I even softened that with a wink and
the word "suggesting."

Quote:

I think of Springsteen being more "rock" and more of a "band." I
eliminated him on that basis. I also skipped James Brown, based on
considering him more of a "band." I skipped Zappa and Prince too. Just
my take on a very gray issue.

Quote:

Well, it's kind of a detached, clinical question for me, because the
question doesn't have a lot to do with my own personal tastes.

Put it this way...out of the folks I already named, Dylan, Stevie
Wonder, Paul Simon and Randy Newman are the only ones I'd consider being
anywhere near viable candidates.

Sinatra, Ray Charles, Aretha, Elvis..... Mmm, Johnny Cash is sort of a
judgment call, depending on whether he's too "pure" country.

Michael Jackson, Streisand, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson,
Madonna....

Maybe those would be the "objective" frontrunners.
