I am thinking about doing something like this ( perhaps next year ? ).
I don't have any desire to do a distance like 50 miles no thank you.
A 50k though might not be a bad distance and could break me out of the
doldrums running in flat Ohio.
I don't do any altitude training so something like Vermont would
probably be reasonable. If anyone knows, how much in elevation
changes do you go thru in the 50k?
Did the race change from being just a 50 mile one to add the 50k? Do
the 50k people just skip some of the middle distance and finish at the
same place ( somehow ) or do you get transported from 50k finish to
the end?
What would be a reasonable time goal? Although I am not racing 26
miles in a while my guess is that I am probably in the 3:30 range for
a generic marathon course. Maybe something like 5 flat or is that
just whacko based on terrain etc?
Hey I2 ya wanna meet up and pace each other in this one next year?
Thanks for ideas anyone! |

I think any runner who can handle the distance would really enjoy the
vermont course and time of year up there.
Thanks to your reply I did find the trail description. The trails
sound like many of them are horse paths ... that's very similar to
what I run on around here.
When the description says 5600 feet of vertical is that both up and
down or would that mean just the up part?
Since you start and finish at the same point ... you must get all that
climbing distance back. Of course using it effectively going down
compared to putting the effort in going up is the tricky part and
something I don't have any real experience in at least over long
distances.

Maybe Doug might have an idea here looks like he did this event last
year.

I should have more to offer after running it this year.
Good luck Tony!
If I do try this next year it sounds like a good first attempt at
doing something different that's fairly reasonable and not just plain
overboard. |

Doug has the most experience at Vermont and has been trying to convince
me to run there. I am sold, but wife signed me up for Adirondack a week
before Vermont. So, the next year is a possibility. If Doug runs that distance,
it would be a challenge just to keep up with him. I know this from comparing
my club member who places near the top of AG in marathons and who smokes
me out in 26.2's (though I am bit quicker in 10 mi or less) was slower than Doug
at last year's VT 50K. Pendejo also has shown some interest recently in running a
50K, Tony runs there various distances.
Maybe we can make 2009 VT50K as a wreck.runners challenge.
Maybe some dog fish head on the line ( http://www.dogfish.com )? My
favorite brewery lately well outside of the local ones like Great
Lakes Brewery.
Looks like it might be doable as a 3 day drive to Vt on Saturday ...
sleep 10 hours ... do the race Sunday ... sleep 10 hours ( ok maybe
12 ) ... drive back monday. |

Finishes in the same place as per description above.

Yea it sounds like there's a bit more on roads than with the 50 miler. Maybe
too much for me!

--------------------------
That's 5600' up and 5600' down, which can pound the quads if it's steep
going down; probably not the case at VT, though it could well still toast
your quads if you don't practice sets of long downhills -- a problem I
expect to have this year. In my first 50 miler my quads were completely
toasted and couldn't support my weight going down any incline after about
50k, and I had to navigate all downhills going backwards, but my ability to
go at normal speed on downhills was affected long before that...

Dunno but that looks slow for Doug. I think he was lollygagging it last year
;)

Thanks John! I'll need it. I think it's a good race for a foray into unknown
territory.

You sure you didn't mishear, and I actually expressed interest in
sliding down a fifty foot razor blade into a pool of gasoline? |

I can only handle the lights, like Heineken & some Sam Adams.
Not sure what kind it is, but looks interesting enough to try once. |

Done the 50 about 13 times and the 50k once and may do the 50k it again
this year not sure which

Just an add.

Start and stop same place just cuts off some of the 50.

Tying to map a road marathon to a trail 50k is not realistic. The 5,600
feet is quite a bit of accumulated up and down. By the way it's 5,600 of
up AND 5,600 of down. It all good footing but primarily single track
Your time will be proportional to how you train and your respect at race
pace.
5 flat puts you in top 20. I think that's a bit aggressive and would
lean more to 5:30 5:45 unless you can find some significant hills in
Ohio and do about 3 4 hour long runs on them. This is not an easy 50k.
In fact many 50 mile races have this amount of elevation. I would try
the HAT run http://www.hatrun.com/ in the spring and although they claim
it has 10k, it is BS or the VT50k has 20K and is under estimating.
There are easier and closer ones. Groundhog 50k in Punxy(home of the
groundhog) , Pa is easier and closer to you.

This is a news to me, is it a new 'sport'? has anyone finished alive?
