(sorry for cross posts)
I was quite surprised to learn today that copies of Eight Arms to Hold
You, the Solo Beatles Compendium by Chip Madinger and Mark Easter are
still available. I thought it was long gone. My own copy is worn out
from extensive use over the past seven years. It's easily one of the
best values in my Beatles reference collection.
By now nearly everyone here must be familiar with 8 Arms. Anyone
interested in the recording legacy of the ex-Beatles needs this book.
Madinger and Easter cover every extant recording made by the former
Fabs up to 2000. Their style is informative, opinionated, and witty
and there is no more authoritative reference. These writers cover all
recordings, too - not just commercial releases. You can read about
concerts, unreleased recording sessions and home tapes, movie, videos,
television appearances and the bootlegs they appear on. Unlike some
recording references, this one contains multiple indices that make
locating and retrieving information easier.
Is it out of date? Yes, but its accuracy remains unaffected. Madinger
is working with Scott Raile on an exhaustive Lennon project now. This
book appeared before many people found their way to the World Wide Web
and information on more recent recordings is scattered all over the
Internet. 8 Arms remains the single best source for this information
prior to 2000 and it covers the best music the Fabs made as
individuals.
The authors are among a handful of Beatles historians who self publish
their work (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/26/books/26beat.html?
pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=arts).
Traditional publishers are still confused about how to proceed in a
digital world and important books like this one may never find a
capable mass marketing publisher. That's too bad. Support the authors;
find a copy for yourself. There's no reason to buy used, just go to

and click on the button. |
