False analogy. Kerry was an actual nominee for President. Hillary was
only a contender for that nomination. If Obama loses in November,
Hillary could come back strong in '012 as the choice that should have
been made. An argument can be made that the media was unfair to her.
(I'll agree the media was very unfair, but that's not why she lost.)

Maybe John Edwards is a better analogy. He did worse this year than in
the '04 primaries (discounting his recent troubles).

I think Americans tend to tag people as losers permanently. The only
recent counterexample is Bush I, who lost to Reagan during the '08
primaries, but he had the advantage of being Reagan's VP.

Well, the tendency of Republicans seems to be different than the Democrats.

There is the Bush example you give. Nixon lost to Kennedy in 1960. Reagan
lost to Ford for the nomination in 1976. Today we see McCain as the
Republican nominee even though he lost the nomination in 2000 and was
written off in early 2007.

John Edwards. I've always liked him, but I've also always felt ambivalent
about him. I was not at all surprised about his adultry because he always
struck me as a playboy type. So, his affair just confirmed that suspicion.
But, it also did not matter to me. Still doesn't. I think if he were
elected he would have followed through on many of the things he advocated.
That's all I cared about.

Edwards was up against two very strong candidates in this primary. His
showing in Iowa was surprising, but he worked hard for a very long time
there. Given the strength of Obama and Hillary, I just don't think the
analogy is a good one.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Al Gore
run again. That might have put this "Dems bury their dead" nonsense to rest.
I think it is nonsense. It's just a coincidental trend that has occurred
because of lackluster candidates.

On the other hand, if Obama is elected in the fall, Hillary's chances
are gone forever. I think a lot of Hillary supporters realize this and
this may be why it is hard to get them back in the fold.

They're not going to be doing her any favors by supporting McCain.
