AVP hosts youth volleyball clinic
Kids get lessons from top pros in Long Beach
A contingent of youth from the Fairfield and Downtown Long Beach YMCA,
as well as the Long Beach area Boys & Girls Clubs, are in for a rare
treat. Not only will they enjoy a day at the beach, but they will be
given a free beach volleyball clinic from some of the top
professionals from the AVP Crocs Tour.
The Charter Communications AVP Youth Volleyball Clinic features
instruction on the game's fundamentals for children who rarely get to
spend time on the sand. The clinic features two hours of lessons on
the basics of the game, led by pro beach volleyball player and Olympic
gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana and his Dig 4 Kids Foundation. It will
be held on Wednesday, July 23, at the AVP Stadium on Marina Green in
Long Beach (next to Shoreline Village) and will run from 3-5 p.m.
Along with Fonoimoana, other AVP volleyball stars participating in the
clinic include Jennifer Fopma, Brittany Hochevar, Katie Lindquist,
Tracy Lindquist, Anthony Medel, Ryan Mariano, Whitney Pavlik, Matt
Prosser, Ed Ratledge and Stacy Rouwenhorst. The Charter Communications
AVP Youth Volleyball Clinic will be the kick-off event for the AVP
Crocs Slam Bud Light Long Beach Open, July 24-27. The tournament
features eight members of the 2008 Beijing Olympics squad: Misty May-
Treanor and Kerri Walsh, Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, Elaine
Youngs and Nicole Branagh, and Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal.
Dig 4 Kids was founded in 2000 by Fonoimoana after he became concerned
about the lack of youth education and exercise programs in
disadvantaged communities. The first Dig 4 Kids pilot program in
Carson, Calif., was a success, and the Foundation has since gained
both national and international recognition and sponsorships for its
efforts, helping more than 2,300 children learn the importance of
education and physical fitness.
