THRILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just watched the marvelous Das Rheingold from the newly acquired
Copenhagen Ring...I no longer put modern stagins down if they
WORK..especially when the subject matter is mythological/universal.
What an exciting performance..magnificently sung..EVERY member of
the cast is first rate...and the quality of the DVD and the sound are
outstanding.
You learn so much about the details of the Ring here...The
concept has Brunnhiilde searching her father's "library" and trying to
find out what happened....(17 hours ago???). The Alberich of the
superb Sten Byriel bears some resemblance to Boris Karloff, and they
make him up with a horrible-looking kind of growth on one cheek. When
Wotan and Loge have captured him, he is hanging all chained up, and
when Wotan takes the Ring from his arm (the "Ring" is a long winding
bracelet halfway up the arm, part of the arm COMES OFF...bloody...and
it is thrilling.
There are so many wonderful effects...It is a gem and I repeat..if it
WORKS...in this case one cannot always expect a totally "traditional"
staging.
The audience goes ballistic at the curtain calls, and deservedly
so....I cannot wait to watch the other three operas.
LORD!! How can a man create such a phenomenal body of work..it
is still amazing to me after all these years. |
