In another newsgroup, someone is overusing the cliche that (he claims)
Vincent Van Gogh never sold a painting while he was alive. I would
like to put this to rest one way or the other. Reading around, I see
that he was comissioned to do some drawings for pay. Was he ever paid
for a painting while he was alive?

This is typical usenet ignorance. It is well-established that Van Gogh sold
one painting while alive. For details, see any of the biographies.
