Here on the Virginia Piedmont, beautiful weather after a "fropa," as
the Weather Bureau says.

The bluebird house has not been occupied for two weeks or more. The
first two nestings ended in tragedy. An alpha male drove off a
Carolina Wren that was building a next in the box, then guarded the
place for several days, but drew no sustained interest from any
female. So far . . .

Warm summer weather here with frequent showers. Hummingbirds are still
feeding constantly. I don't see other birds because I took the feeders
down (bears).

Robert in northern Alabama, US.

Yesterday morning, a hawk flew much closer to the bird feeders
here than usual - about 10 feet or 3 meters. All the other birds
decided it was time to hide and be quiet. A finch was the first
one to come back to the feeders; later a number of small birds,
probably sparrows and Carolina chickadees. The larger birds,
such as doves and grackles, were slow to come back even
after the small birds did.

Gail near San Antonio TX.

Cardinals seem to be here to stay. In previous years they were only
occasional visitors.

Our Mockingbird has us well-trained. We feed it cat food by hand and
if not available to do that, leave the garage door open with a dish of
food on the car roof. Sheesh...

Hummers are back with a vengeance, Purple Martins are still around, as
are Barn Swallows (on the patio).

On the down side, Grackles are much more in evidence than usual.

At least we're in a cooling period (low 90s) with rain in the area,
but I haven't gotten any yet! :(

Reporting from Minnesota. Hummers are here, Catbirds are very vocal and
eating suet and the Chickadees and Cardinals are at the feeders.
4th of July weekend is here, and there will be lots of noise from
firecrackers, which doesn't bother me. I do have concerns about people
launching bottle rockets, etc. on the path through the woods next to
our house. We had rain a week or so ago so I think the fire danger is
low, but I still get a little nervous.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Fourth and had a great weekend!

I've seen a couple hummers so if I have extra time, want to set up my
feeders this year!

Jerry here from central New Jersey. There are two thing worthy of
report. Purple finches are eating niger from the sock feeder that's been
out since last fall. The young beat that hung around the parking lot at
MacDonald's (about a mile from here) for a few days didn't make it
necessary to take the seed feeder down.

Not a beet: a bear. Male, as far as one could tell.

I have been having problems with my wireless keyboard but, I am still

kicking but, not buying any more green bananas Smile The weather here
finally turned to summer and my hummingbird vine has started to take off
so perhaps the hummers will return.

Kinda boring here on the birds. Goldfinches have become common. Regular
finches abound. Lots of dove, and the quail have gotten familiar with
coming into the yard for seed, and now come within ten feet of the back
porch door. Reading up on all the colorful birds that SHOULD inhabit this
area, and still looking for them. Am going up to the cabin in the next few
days, and hope to see more color up there.

Broke a vertebra in my back July Fourth on an ATV. Looks like I'll have
some extra time on my hands now for bird watching.

Steve

Good grief Steve! I trust it is healing bud...

As for me spending far too many hours at work and too little time at
home watching birds. I did have a neat thing happen yesterday as I was
mowing the lawn, a Grey Catbird and a Robin were following me and the
mower grabbing bugs as fast as they could. I felt like a Cow being
followed by a Cattle Egret!

That is neat!

First time I mowed our back lawn years ago I was startled by a flight of
what I now think I know as Barn Swallows "on the deck at 12 0'clock" as
we used to say. High closing rate! Pull up into a vertical climb just
enough to clear my hat brim. Steep bank, back again. Over and over again.

I finally figured out that the down draft from the mower engine stirred
up a cloud of bugs just in front of the mower.

Now we mark "Spring" (a la San Juan Capistrano) by the swallows escort
arrival.

Steve, from Fearrington Village, NC. Just back from our choral tour
of Italy, where we sang Carmina Burana twice, and several other
concerts, and we got to sing in the Sistine Chapel. A true highlight
- awesome.

Saw quite a few birds I couldn't identify, but with the help of Dr.
Bill Leuchtenberg, I identified my first Rook.

Hot and humid there, hot and humid back home.
