We have been busy for the past several weeks working on putting a
huge fountain in our back yard. Why? So the hummers will have water
rippling down at several points to fly through.
We use to have a rain bird going to water the back pasture but it
was an hourly effort to keep it moved. We are hoping that the
fountain will fill that need for running water.
Lanny do you know what they like to go through the water? Is it
because it is so hot and it cools them down? Bored?
They don't bath in the lake. Though we see them down there (when we
are fishing) with the swallows catching mosquitos and no see 'ems.
The Fish and Game guy said there are fewer mosquitoes here than in the
city. Whatever works.
Is the word on Perky Pet ready made hummer food, still not as good
as just sugar solution? |

Like all birds, hummers like to bathe regularly. Clean feathers work
better.

Correct. It's not as close to flower nectar, and it contains ingredients
of unknown effect on the birds' health. Plain sugar water has been
thoroughly tested for safety.
As for spoiling birds: the birds will manage with or without you, as
they always have. It's YOU that you're spoiling, by enjoying their
company. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

When you've built a small pool (that the critters drink out of) with
high diving board? I finally did it this year after joking to my
sister that the small metal presentation container that held a pot of
jam and other condiments looked like a bird bath.
Next step before the asylum - miniature poolside recliners with towels! |

Today I had my first hummer go into the over flow. I was never so
proud. Why? Because all that money wasn't wasted on them (although I
sure enjoy sitting out there and watching the hummers even more. The
sound of the water though, drowns out the bird sounds. That's a
bummer. |

I've yet to build a whole recreational area though and will stop prior
to that. |

That is a keeper. I water my plants not so much for plants but for the
birds via a oscillating sprinkler. I use a soaker hose for the plants.
