I used to play the recorder as a teenager and then stopped playing it
when I went into the service. But last week, one of my kids said, "the
recorder is not a real instrument..." and I wondered how Vivaldi or
Telemann would have reacted at such a comment. So that made me look
into playing the recorder again but I need guidance--it's been too
long?

I'm going to purchase an alto recorder but only because Wikipedia
indicated that it's the most common "beginner" route. I don't
understand what "baroque" fingering is? Can anyone explain this? Any
suggestions on re-starting my recorder playing? I'm a beginner again
as it's been so long since I played it. Any tips? Websites? I'm
mostly interested in early(medieval) and baroque piesces.

Thanks.

Actually, it says the C Soprano(descant) is, which corresponds with what
I see for sale in stores.

See <URL:http://www.aswltd.com/finger.htm>. Summary: "Baroque fingering"
has become the usual name for what is actually modern fingering, and it
is by far the most common type today. It is almost certainly what you
learned before, and what you should start with now.

I had a stereo record of the Telemann Suite in A minor -- David Munrow
the soloist. I'll have to do some research to see if it's been re-
issued. Get that, play it for your children, and see what they say! I
guess they based their opinion on the recorder's prevalent use in
children's music classes.
