I finally got my little boy chipped at his annual physical and shots.
The vet suggested I get him done. She showed strong emotion as she
described how she went to N'Awlins to help animals devastated
by Katrina. Not only the horrible conditions her team found in
deserted houses with animals trapped inside. But what got me was her
telling about animals roaming the streets in terrible shape. The
volunteer vets had no way to locate the owners; the animals had no
chips and no collars. I started to mouth off about "disadvantaged
people who don't take care of their pets", and stopped short. Who was
I to be patronizing others!!!!
Right then & there I signed up, my little boy got his chip -- didn't
let out so much as a "meow" -- and I sent in the paperwork..
I had been under the impression that it was very expensive,
but that was not the case.

I have no idea what you're talking about. What does this chip do and how
much did it cost to install it? |

Here's Wikipedia's Website that explains microchipping.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchip_implant_(animal)
There are many other Websites. Just search under
"microchip for pets" or similar wording. (I didn't want
to seem to endorse one company over another.)
As you will see on Wikipedia, the microchip embedded
under the pet's skin has a code that enables a lost pet to be
identified when it's turned in to the police or animal shelter.
All these authorities now have scanners that can read the
animal's microchip.
It cost $35 to insert the chip at the vet's, and $18.50 to register
the code with the company -- in this case AVID, though
again no endorsement implied; it's the one the vet uses.
For multiple animals, the cost is different.
The vet warned that my cat might emit a surprised "meow"
when the assistant shot the chip under his skin, but he
never turned a hair (pun intended).

Just STFU for a little while and grow up. |

We had both our cats chipped as well. It was done while they were
getting fixed, so they were unconscious for the procedure.
Our cats roam the yard and neighbors yards also with no collars
so it seemed like a good idea.
I was told that some of the chips can float around the cat's
body, but not harm anything when they do. But hopefully all
animal control techs are trained to search the entire kitty for
the chip, just in case.
If you move or change phone numbers, you need to change it with
AVID or whatever company is used.
