I heard a wonderful new age music composer on DirecTV SoundScapes many
years ago but for the life of me I can't remember his name. He
composed the most wonderful, what I call, "deep space" music that was
so etherical, it can trance very easily. I know this is scarce
information but I know that it was a name like "melvin" or "harold" or
something that is very common but his name ended with a twist. Again,
I know this is very scarce information but hoping someone could help
me. |

Could it be Harold Budd? |

Not him but I just listened to some of his music on iTunes and sounds
great. Thanks for the help. |

Your trying to come up with a likely name had me smiling. "Melvin" and
"Harold?" I immediately thought Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.
They are/were decidedly NOT New Age, but R&B. Their lead singer was
Teddy Pendergrass. Of course you would have known this wasn't
what you were looking for right off the bat if someone had suggested
them to you.
I remember watching an episode of "Miami Vice" many years ago. This
episode had this quasi Gregorian chant/New Age track. I loved the
music, but couldn't figure out how to find who the performers were;
there was no Internet then (mid 1980s) as we know it today. I wrote
to the broadcaster, but never got a response.
About a decade later, I heard the track on local radio while driving
in Montana. I was on my way to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. I
immediately pulled off the road and rummaged through my glove
compartment looking for a pencil so I could write down the artists'
names. Typically, a DJ will play several tracks by several artists
before revealing who the artists are. Fortunately, the track I wanted
was the last track in the program. The DJ came on the air and said
"you have just been listening to Capers..." Capers? Okay, I guess.
I went to record stores looking for Capers. Nothing. Who? This
was in 1994, and I still was not on the Internet, and don't know
if it could have helped in those days anyway.
By 1997 I was on the net, and looked up the Miami Vice episode.
YEA Internet!! It gave me two names, Angelo Baldementi and
Kate Bush. I immediately eliminated Kate Bush since these were
all male voices I heard. I checked out AB. Nothing. Nada. Back
to square one. Someone on a newsgroup told me it WAS
Kate Bush. It was a track called "Hello Earth." I listened to
the track, but it didn't start off promising. It was not what I
expected to hear, but I let the track continue. Finally the
track paused, and that familiar choral sound came in. That's it!
Eureka! I've found it. Finally, after all these years.
The performers were not Kate Bush. It was explained to me
that she "sampled" their music for her track, and that the group
was not credited. So I still don't know who they are, but I have
the music anyway. Someone said that same piece was used
in the movie "Nosferatu" by Werner Herzong. The song was
called CinCqaro, or Zinskaro, or Tsintskaro. I was told
it was by the Richard Hickox Singers (probable) and
by Gordela (perhaps a different version).
What you heard as Harold or Melvin is probably phonetically
close, but not close enough to trigger any results. What I
thought was "Capers" was really Kate Bush; my hearing,
or the DJ's enunciation I guess. I was doomed from the
start.
Anyway, I wasted your time, and still don't have a name
for you :>) Sorry. But that's the way New Age is; it's hell trying
to figure who, and even if you find who, it is even harder
trying to get the music. I've heard quite a bit listening to
PBS (U.S. public TV), and even taped the credits, but for
the most part, forget about actually obtaining the music.
"Deep Space?" I'm curious about this one. I hear "space music"
all the time, but I don't recall this term. Let's don't add yet
another term to the already long list. I keep thinking perhaps
that music 15 billion light years away is different from music,
say just 2 billion light years away! It may be though, I dunno.
Anyway, bill@windandwire may be of great assistance in
finding the artist you are looking for. He is the most familiar
with all the artists and their various New Age genres.
Sorry, I couldn't really help. I just wanted to share some
past frustrations. It may take you awhile. Most programs
these days have play lists by dates, and keep them awhile.
No doubt you have tried this approach via program
archives. You may not need the exact dates, but if you
can bracket some dates, and spend a little time scouring
the lists, you may find a recognizable name. Good luck.
