You will likely see this concoction mentioned frequently on this site. It is not because I am being paid by Lapostolle. It is a labor of love.

I was first introduced to Grand Marnier Cent Cinquantenaire by nature of its inclusion in the Millionaire Margarita recipe at Claiborne''s Restaurant in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They serve a fantastic Millionaire Margarita, and at some point I will post a recipe for it here. I started wondering how much better it could be than "ordinary" Grand Marnier, if you could ever call Grand Marnier ordinary.

Last fall, with a beach vacation coming up, I started researching it. Despite the high price tag (or perhaps partly because of the high price tag), I ordered a bottle ($200+).

The first thing that struck me was the bottle. It is a thing of beauty. Hand-finished, ornate, and gorgeous. Upon opening the bottle, however, the beauty of the vessel quickly became overwhelmed by the rich aromas which emerged. It was like those old cartoons, where the steam from the freshly baked pie in the window would wander down the street and actually lift the character, propelling him toward the pie.

I cannot describe the taste of this elixir. It simply must be experienced. There is nothing to dislike. Nothing detracts from it. It is perfect. There are few perfect things in this world. This most definitely one of them. The taste lingers on your lips long after the glass has been put down.

This liquor left me with an empty space in my soul. All I could do when the bottle was empty was wonder how I could make enough money to quit my job, give up my worldly possessions, and wander the earth preaching the gospel of Cuvée 150. I did keep the bottle, and occasionally I open it briefly to savor the aroma again. Hopefully I''ll be able to afford another bottle before the smell wears out in this one.

Interesting tidbit. Some folks mistakenly believe this is 150 year old Grand Marnier. This is incorrect. It''s a 150th anniversary commissioning of a special premium blend of Grand Marnier, which does include (quoting the brochure) "the finest Grande Champagne Cognacs, some of which have attained 50 years of age. This rich blend is left to rest for three more years in oak casks until it reaches its full potential, revealing exceptional aromatic complexity and strength."

Oh, and by the way -- Happy Birthday, Henry Rollins!
