I am looking for a children's book and was wondering if you could help at
all.
I don't know the author/illustrator/publisher etc which I know isn't
helpful! I don't even remember the story line. It has been the
illustrations that have stood out in my mind over the years and they are
the reason for me wanting to trace the book.
Each double page was one illustration and the book was a hardback,
landscape A4 (ish) size. The pictures were surreal line drawings coloured
with muted watercolours. They were fairly detailed but not overly
realistic. If there was any writing it would have been one or two lines at
the bottom of each page.
Each picture had a small steam engine pulling a few carriages in it and
wove it's way through a surreal countryside as the book progressed. I
remember half buried clocks were a prominent feature of the illustrations
which were rather Dali-like, and in one of the pictures there was a garden
area sectioned off by a rought iron fence. Within the garden were
bedraggled looking peacocks some of whom had lost a few tail feathers and
these lay on the ground nearby.
I would have had this book in the early 1970's
I realise this isn't a lot to go on, but if you could give me any
information if any of these descriptions has rung a bell, I would be very
grateful.

I didn't recognize this book, but I copied and pasted your query over on
BookSleuth.
Unfortunately, nothing concrete turned up, but there are a few leads in the
reply:
"Well of course one first thinks of The Mysteries of Harrison Burdick (if I
have the title right) but that's too recent. Hm - I think someone posted a
similar query on the UK forum, and I asked there if it might have been one of
the Harlin Quist books, which were published in the 70s and had often
surrealistic illustrations and fragmented storylines. Unfortunately I'm not
familiar enough with their output to suggest anything definite."
Hope this helps somewhat.
Let us know if you manage to identify the book!

Yes, I did post the same query in the UK Book Sleuth.
Harlin Quist did look the right kind of publisher for this book and I
found a website listing their whole range but none of them was the one.
The art work in their collection had the same quirkiness about it but
nothing was quite the same.
Thanks for all your help so far, you never know, it mught jog someone's
memory!
