My daughter is reading an anthology of modern fairy tales, and one of
the stories is Carl Sandburg's "The Story of Blixie Blimber and the
Power of the Gold Buckskin Whincher."
We can't figure out what a whincher is from the context of the story,
other than that it is small enough to tie around one's neck. I can't
even tell if it's made of buckskin (which can be gold in color), or
made of gold and is used for "whinching" buckskin.
Dictionaries have been useless.
Does anyone know if there is any such thing in real life, or is it a
literary joke that Sandburg is playing on us?
Thanks!

Knowing Sandburg, I'd guess the latter. He made up *lots* of stuff in the
Rootabaga Country stories.
