Has anyone ever raised wood ducks as pets? I'm not referring to
outside in the pen type pets, but raising them as if they are an exotic
bird that you'd keep indoors on a perch or a large dog kennel. If
anyone had a pet wood duck, can you elaborate on its communication
efforts? Thanks,
Marc

Like all native wild birds in North America, they're protected by the
Migratory Bird Treaty Act. You can hunt ducks, in season and with a
permit, but you can't keep them as pets.

Hello Lanny,
There are several licensed breeders of native wild birds that sell
-legally - to the public. So by condition, a person should be allowed
to keep a wood duck or a mallard, or a Canada goose as a pet if
acquired that way.

Try Murray McMurry Hatchery. Juvenile wood ducks--when they have
them-- are $80 per pair.

They also have a lot of exotic ducks and other fowl.

Make that McMurray Hatchery. The office is too cold for good typing
this morning.

There are several other places to buy wood ducks.

There's an entire industry devoted to raising gamebirds for sale.
What's illegal is to capture them from the wild.

Sounds pretty foul to me.
