Dear friends,
1) It was going to be hard act to follow, but our Winter Solstice
Dance in June, might have topped our Pride and Prejudice Dance Party
in May. Many thanks to everyone for dressing up, coming along,
bringing supper contributions, joining in on all the dancing, and
making so welcome our guests from the U.S. - whose excellence in
voice, costume and spirit exceeded all expectations.
Now, coming up on Saturday 17th July we have Part 2 of our winter
celebrations, our Christmas In July dance (St.John's Church Hall,
Constitution Ave, 8:00pm). Though the program is going to be
completely different from the Winter Solstice one, it will have just
as much breadth and appeal. This time our guests-from-afar, are from
midsummer-celebrating Sweden.
Marianne Bylund and children Louise and Oskar have just arrived for a
month in Canberra, and Marianne and Louise have kindly agreed to each
lead a traditional Swedish dance. Two local dancers Trish Gray and
William Steed, have also agreed to lead two fine dances they have
written. In between we will enjoy the pavan ‘In the Bleak Midwinter',
the new year celebrating ‘Cutty Wren', the ballad ‘Drive the Cold
Winter Away', the 1650 dance ‘The Kettle Drum' (which many have felt
defies reconstruction – but for which we have a convincing
interpretation, the ‘Sound of Music Landler' (as seen in the movie),
‘Astral Allemande', ‘His Majesty's Maggot', ‘Snowball Slalom',
‘Northern Stars Southern Skies', ‘The Baltic Crossing', fun dances
that go to ‘O Tannenbaum' and ‘Jingle Bells', free couples dancing,
and some more of Aylwen's hot spicy apple drink (and this time we'll
make sure we bring all the spices necessary to bring it to
perfection!). All you need do is get some friends together, dress up
however you like (Christmas touches welcome), pack a small supper
contribution and come along.
2) You don't need to wait till 17th July to meet the above named
guests and enjoy some of the above named dances… we will be doing so
also at this coming Sunday's ‘Dancing on the Lake', 4 to 6:30pm at
YMCA Sailing Club, Alexandrina Drive, Yarralumla. As always, newcomers
are welcome. Prices scaling down from $10.
3) Its coming around again! Enrolment for John's A.N.U. ‘Dancing
through the Ages' course opens Monday 19 July. The classes commence
Monday 26 July and run for 13 weeks all the way to the end of
semester. People always have a lot of fun and learn a lot. Prices are
just $80 student, $90 for Sports Union members and $110 for outsiders
– and outsiders are always welcome! More information on enrolling is
at http://www.earthlydelights.com.au/upcoming1.htm
4) For those who want some more dancing, there is the Society for
Creative Anachronisms St.Vitas (Renaissance) Dance Weekend at
Bungendore Hall this coming Saturday (all day) and Sunday (till
lunchtime). Included in the range of teachers is John from Earthly
Delights offering a class at 3:40pm Sat. reconsidering some 1651
dances and at 11am Sun. on Christmas Carol Dances. You can pay by
session or for all weekend (just $33). Bookings to Beth Schoenberg ,
Ph 02 6161 1982 .
5) Looking ahead, our dance on Saturday 17 July is followed by Dancing
on the Lake the very next day, Sunday 18 July, and the next 5 Sundays
leading up to our long anticipated, enchanting Cinderella Ball, on
Saturday 21 August – more on that later.
