I'm looking for two tickets to the canadian antique road show that's coming
here in May. Does anyone have a couple of tickets they want to part with? |

From what I've seen of some of the clowns working on that show I'd get
a second opinion ;~) A couple of weeks ago one of their " Appraisers"
said a "Violet Ray" machine was worth $3500.00, even though they sell
all the time on ebay for under $150.00. Yet another appraised a
Victorian chair you would be hard pressed to get $600.00 these days for
$1500.00. |

.........I know a few of the appraisers on the western Canadian show. Nice
guys but certainly trying to keep the ratings up versus giving realistic
appraisals. I have a violet ray machine in my showcase and was wondering
why a fellow came in recentley and said; " I saw that machine on the
Roadshow and you are asking WAY to little" ....... it's been here for two
months @ 175.00..........anybody wanna' make a quick 3k? |

The appraisals are usually "insurance appraisals", and Roadshow
is sponsored (at least in the US) by Chubb, who provide insurance
for "valuables". I think that's an interesting connection. How many
people have contacted Chubb to insure their quack machines for
$3,000...since that show?

.........or tried to sell to a dealer for 2000.00 wholesale? I have several
pieces of "quackery" on the shelves now including a complete hamilton beach
massage kit ( c.1915) with multiple massage heads. Fella came in the other
day and said; "you know what those were used for dontcha'?" After he glanced
left and right to make sure there were no ladies present, he opined about
how cool it would have been to be a doctor in those days........

Heh. Anybody wanna steal one of mine (after I up my insurance,
of course)? It's astonishing how many of these are still around.
Hell, they're still being made, even. The machines to look for are
the very early floor-standing cabinets, with lots of marble panels
and leaded glass.
Roadshow folks aren't always up to snuff on technology. I saw
an episode where a alcohol-powered hot air fan was described as
having a turbine, where they're actually Sterling heat-cycle engines.
He even lit the fan and had it running -- ya'd think the piston
would've been a clue. At least he got the price right on that one.

.....one item i have on the floor currently, brings lots of chuckles but no
buyers @ $80.00 is a floor model waist reducer (c.1945) machine.....you
know, one of those big belts that you put around your waist to supposedly
jiggle all your fat away....saw a couple of sour faced wives walk away after
their husbands made a rude remark.......the "I love Lucy " crowd really dig
it. |

......what makes MY teeth grind is when they refer to the 'leads' of a
stained glass lamp/ window , when its obviously copper foil. |
