My daughter is interested in walking marathons or half marathons for
women over 50...how to train for one or where there might be some....
I couldn't find a walking marathon newsgroup so thought someone here
might have information.....

Thanks very much......Aggie

She might like the John "The Penguin" Bingham approach to running that
encourages lots of walking with the running.

http://www.johnbinghamracing.com/

I have read 2 of his books: "The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for
Your Life", and "No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of
Running". Both are good for beginners for technique and inspiration.

You can find the books new or used at www.amazon.com

GOOD LUCK!

Try using www.google.com with the following phrase
"(volkssport OR walk) marathon"
(be sure to capitalize the OR)

Volkssport is a large walking organization which I was aware of because
its activities are listed in our statewide running calendar, but I know
nothing about it.

http://www.ava.org/

Volkssport is non-competitive. And I don't know if they have longer distance
events; 10k is fairly common. People start duringa time window, not
all-at-once like a race. And the event is un-timed. It's nice for
social-exercising & supported walking in different areas, but not if you
want competition or to test yourself against others/time/whatever.
