The Bay Area English Regency Society < http://www.baers.org >
(BAERS) is pleased to present a ball and workshop on June 26,
and some dance parties (May 14, June 12, July 9).

THE MASTERS AND COMMANDERS BALL
June 26, 2004 8:00 - 11:30 pm
Arlington Community Church
52 Arlington Avenue in Kensington (in the hills east of Berkeley)
$20 at the door, $15 in advance. $2 discount for BACDS and GBACG members.

To glory we steer!

Enjoy an evening of English country dances and waltzes in the spirit of the
early 1800s, the time of Nelson, Cochrane (and, in fiction) Hornblower, Aubrey,
and Maturin. Celebrate the 199.7th anniversary of Nelson's famous victory
at the Battle of Trafalgar < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Trafalgar >

Civilians and visitors from the future are welcome.

Alan Winston leads the dancing.

The Divertimento Dance Orchestra plays, under the direction of James Langdell

Sing - or enjoy listening - to period naval songs like
"The Battle of the Nile" and "Hearts of Oak."

Period costume and uniforms are admired but not required; festive dress is
appropriate. Contributions to the refreshment table are welcome.

Earlier in the day, at the same location, 2:30 - 5:30 in the afternoon, enjoy a
workshop with East Coast vintage dance leader Susan de Gaurdiola (of the
Elegant Arts Society, < http://www.elegantarts.org > on authentic
Regency-period figures and footwork, which can be used to enhance your period
country dancing. The workshop will have live music by James Langdell.
Separate admission is $10, or combined Ball/workshop admission is $25.

Our balls are generally accessible even to very new dancers, but if you'd like
an advance look at some of the dances, or just want to do more English dancing
at a time BACDS doesn't have any, you can come to one of our SECOND-FRIDAY
dance parties at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto.

The Bay Area English Regency Society sponsors informal (casual dress) dance
parties at St. Mark's Episcopal Church (600 Colorado Avenue, a block and a half
off Middlefield, in Palo Alto) on the second Friday of each month (except
January, August, and December).

These dance parties are an opportunity to learn and dance the flirtatious
waltzes, spirited country dances, and vigorous cotillions of Jane Austen's day
(the late 1700s and early 1800s), in the graceful spirit of the English
Regency. They provide previews of the programs for each of our several annual
Balls, but are fun events in themselves.

Admission $5. All dances taught or prompted, usually by Alan Winston.
Newcomers welcome, no partners required - the custom in Austen's era was to
change partners frequently - live music. Casual dress. Doors open at 7:45;
dancing begins at 8:00 and continues (with a mid-evening break) until 10:30.

On May 14, there'll be a dance party in the Parish Hall at St. Mark's, a very
agreeable space with a wooden floor and good acoustics. (St. Mark's is
housing homeless people this month, so we'll move from the Parish Hall after
the break and finish the evening in the Sanctuary. June and July will be in
the Parish Hall throughout.)

BAERS 2nd-Friday dance parties continue through July, then resume
September-November.

May 14 (Masters & Commanders dances)
June 11 (Dances for the Masters and Commanders Ball)
July 9 (Special Early American dance party)

Festival on Sunday, June 27. Check them out at
