BAERS SECOND-FRIDAY REGENCY DANCE PARTIES ARE BACK!
The Bay Area English Regency Society sponsors informal (casual dress) dance
parties at St. Mark's Episcopal Church (600 Colorado Avenue, a block and a half
off Middlefield, in Palo Alto) on the second Friday of each month (except
January, August, and December).
These dance parties are an opportunity to learn and dance the flirtatious
waltzes, spirited country dances, and vigorous cotillions of Jane Austen's day
(the late 1700s and early 1800s), in the graceful spirit of the English
Regency. They provide previews of the programs for each of our several annual
Balls, but are fun events in themselves.
Admission $5. All dances taught or prompted, usually by Alan Winston.
Newcomers welcome, no partners required - the custom in Austen's era was to
change partners frequently - live music. Casual dress. Doors open at 7:45;
dancing begins at 8:00 and continues (with a mid-evening break) until 10:30.
On May 14, there'll be a dance party in the Parish Hall at St. Mark's, a very
agreeable space with a wooden floor and good acoustics. (St. Mark's is
housing homeless people this month, so we'll move from the Parish Hall after
the break and finish the evening in the Sanctuary.)
BAERS 2nd-Friday dance parties continue through July, then resume
September-November.
Mark your calendars for dance parties:
May 14 (More Masters & Commanders dances)
June 11 (Dances for the Masters and Commanders Ball)
July 9 (Special Early American dance party)
September 10
October 8 (Dances for the Washington Irving / Sleepy Hollow Ball)
November 12 (Favorites)
The remaining BAERS balls for 2004 are
o - the Masters and Commanders Ball - a British naval gathering,
June 26 at the Arlington Community Church in Kensington
o - the Washington Irving Literary Salon and Ball (a ball celebrating the
publication of Sleepy Hollow) October 9 at the San Mateo Masonic Temple.
There will be Regency dancing at BayCon (DoubleTree hotel in San Jose),
May 30th, 8:00 pm.
