Hello,

I will be in England (London and Weymouth) this month and almost every bird
I see will be a bird I've never seen before. I only have a couple of days
to go birding. Which birds will be easy to find? I have the following list
so far of easy birds:

Chaffinch
Garden Warbler
Bullfinch
Blue Tit
Blackbird
Chaffinch
Goldcrest
Goldfinch
G. Spotted Woodpecker
L. Spotted Woodpecker
Great Tit
Green Woodpecker
Green Finch
Blackbird
Jackdaw
Jay
Kingfisher
Robin
Siskin

Actually, I wouldn't bet on that. I went to India a few years ago (almost
exactly halfway around the world). It wasn't primarily for birding, but I
got a country list of 106, of which about 11 were not lifers. You'll
certainly see a bunch of ducks and maybe some egrets that will look very
familiar.

Yep, birds such as starlings, house sparrows and pigeons will not be new to
me either Smile

Well, I live here and have been birding (in a leisurely sort of way) for six
or seven years and I've yet to see lesser spotted woodpecker. I've only seen
siskin and garden warbler once each, and it would be easy for you to go home
without clapping eyes on bullfinch, the other woodpeckers, or a kingfisher!
I'm equally sure there's a lot of others that you will see! You mention no
waders or gulls for instance, which you will see in Weymouth (and in London,
if you go to the right places!)

The first birds you are likely to see when arriving in England are Wood
Pigeon, Crow, Rook, Jackdaw, Magpie, Starling and if near a coast,
Herring Gull and Black Headed Gull. In the western half of the country
which includes Weymouth, Buzzard is very likely. All of these are large
enough to be identified while driving at speed on a motorway from your
point of arrival. Your list includes some less common species such as
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Siskin (very scarce in summer), Garden
Warbler and Kingfisher.

The commonest garden birds are Blackbird, Robin, Dunnock, Blue Tit,
Great Tit, House sparrow and finches. Most hedgerows will also provide
Blackcap, Whitethroat, Chiff Chaff, and Willow Warbler. Any open water
should produce Mallard, Moorhen and Coot.

Don't forget our
Swallow,
Swift,
House Martin,
Sand Martin,

Also Heron, Kestrel, Long-tailed Tit, Dunnock, Skylark and Pied Wagtail -
all of which should be fairly 'easy'.

If you feel like a bit of trip just north of London you might be able to get
onto Red Kite fairly easily not far from High Wycombe off the M40

Good luck.

Garden Warbler

Can be elusive, now that they're raising young and the leaves are out.

Quote:
Bullfinch

Not always easy to see, but common in some areas.

Quote:
L. Spotted Woodpecker

Very, very elusive!

Quote:
Green Finch

Usually written as one word: Greenfinch

Quote:
Siskin

Seasonal; you're very unlikely to see one at this time of year.

You should see much more, though - enjoy your visit!

Others have made some suggestions about species. I just thought I'd ask
whether you've heard of the Radipole Lake reserve in Weymouth.
Definitely the place to go if you're in or near Weymouth. See
http://www.weymouth.gov.uk/main.asp?svid=4&svaid=182&svapid=398

Well I'm back from England, and I saw the following new birds:

Black-headed Gull
Blackbird
Blue Tit
Chaffinch
Coot
Goldfinch
Greenfinch
Grey Heron
House Martin
Jackdaw
Kestrel
Little Egret
Magpie
Moorhen
Oystercatcher
Pied Wagtail
Rook
Shelduck
Swift
Wood Pigeon

The countryside is much nicer in England than in Canada. Nicer roads, nicer
cars, nicer homes. Kinda expensive though Smile
I really lucked out with the weather.

I'd swap my house in London for a place in BC any time. What do they say
about grass being greener on the other side?

What tourists to this place often dont see are social failings such as poor
inner city education, moderate crime and total disregard for the
environment. Littering, polluting and vandalism appear to me, to be at an
all time high at the moment, thus having an immediate effect on the quality
of life, (diminishing) abundance of natural wildlife etc.

Next time give us more notice. We'll find someone to go
birding with you. The UK record for 24 hrs in one county is
close to 160.

The £ will go down again, for sure. Meanwhile stick with the
Euro.

Here in France it's always good. That's because we have the
Euro.;-)
