Hi, I read from the internet that there are places in or near Bar
Harbor, ME that offer "Sunrise Downhill tour", which takes people by
bus to the summit of Mt. Cadillac at 4:30 AM to view the sunrise, and
then let people bicycle down. Anyone knows which places there are
doing this kind of trip? Thanks for the help! |

Sam,
I go to Bar Harbor once a year and pedal up to the top of Cadillac Mountain
for the sunrise and then ride down every morning before the wife gets up. It
takes about 20 minutes to peddle up and less than 5 to come down (I'm 57
years old). I have never seen a bus tour do this though certainly one may
exist. If you are in reasonable bicycling shape pedaling up should not be a
big deal just allow more time. If you stay in downtown Bar Harbor it's about
a 15 minute ride (by bicycle) to the road that starts up the mountain. while
you are there be sure to Bicycle the carriage roads and maybe do a sunset
kayak trip I recommend;

Hello Don, thank you for your great information. That is very helpful.
According to the chart, sun rises at about 4:50 AM in early July. If I
set out before 4:00, I wonder whether there is enough illumination on
the way riding to the Cadillac summit. Or do I need to wear headlight?

Sam,
I recommend a headlamp. The other complication is fog sometimes I get to the
top just to sit there and watch the fog lighten but occasionally you get to
the top and find you are above the fog layer and get to see a truly
spectacular sunrise. I assume you have already made reservations for a place
to stay, as July in Acadia is peak season. While we like Bar Harbor, the
restaurants in Bar Harbor are great, many prefer the quieter parts of the
Island. You might get "A Pocket Guide To The Carriage Roads of Acadia
National Park" from Downeast Books it cost about $4.00 and is available all
over the island and on Amazon. Swimming in the ocean in July is for the
truly hardy as water temperature is about 55-60 degrees F however several
lakes provide great swimming.
Have a great trip
Ron
