I've been told that there's only room for my betta in my Eclipse
System Three based on the gallon-per-inch-of-fish rule of thumb, but
the system is marketed as one that can support more fish than a
conventional tank because of its super-duper filtration system. I'd
like to add another critter or two. Is this a bad idea? If not, what
would be good to put in there with my betta? I'd kind of like to add a
catfish and maybe a frog.

Thanks,

Deana

Deana,

Your Eclipse system can definitely manage more than just the betta but
I'd wait to add more fish until after the tank is cycled (4-6 weeks).

What you add should depend on what the betta will get along with.
Make sure you don't add fish that like to nip at the betta's long fin
and tail, otherwise he will look pretty shabby very quickly. You may
want to add a small cave ornament to the tank for the betta to hide
in. I have a betta in a MiniBow 2.5 and he spends a good part of his
time in the cave when he sleeps.

Do the research to see what other fish are good mates in the same tank
with him.
